A new Cruisers Yachts model offers insight into American boating lifestyles, since the builder seeks owner and dealer feedback to shape its launches. The Cruisers 57 Fly speaks to boaters’ desires to entertain and engage with the water—for instance, by taking transom platforms and folding hullsides to the next level.

Consider the portside deck, where the entire bulwark from the cockpit to the midcabin folds out. Cruisers wasn’t the first to introduce this feature, but the builder added a cool touch by placing a pair of stools next to a sliding window that opens to the galley. A wraparound settee with a dinette across the transom provides an entertainment hub for dining, lounging or water play, all accessible from the oversize swim platform, which submerges for swimming or launching a tender weighing up to 850 pounds. A transom lounge also folds out to create a beach club.

The concept of “water interaction” is more than just splashing around. The 57 Fly also has nearly 360 degrees of salon windows, allowing guests to relax in the interior’s air conditioning while still feeling connected to the surrounding environment. This theme carries through to the staterooms, all of which have oversize windows so guests can enjoy the water views while resting in bed.

The Cruisers 57 Fly could easily be called “party central,” with four dining areas spread across two levels, all supported by two spots to cook. On the main deck, there is a dinette aft and a formal dining area in the salon. The foredeck lounge is truly versatile, converting from sun pads facing either way to bench seating or a dinette with twin tables.

The lower galley has acres of stowage and can be fitted with a dishwasher. Courtesy Cruisers Yachts

The flybridge is another highlight, with its galley and an optional Texan grill measuring 2 square feet. It has a flat plancha (perfect for veggies or omelets) and a traditional grate. The bridge also includes a wraparound dinette that seats 12, with a high-low table partially shaded by the hardtop.

The salon is built for alfresco living, with triple sliding doors and all-weather boating features, including a settee and a 55-inch pop-up TV. The galley has a convection microwave, two-burner Kenyon cooktop, and four fridge drawers for a total of 12.6 cubic feet of stowage. By eliminating a full-height fridge, the Cruisers design team gave the skipper unobstructed visibility aft.

Speaking of the skipper, the helm is a thoughtfully designed, ergonomic space with twin 16-inch Garmin multifunction displays, a Volvo Penta IPS joystick and a double-wide bolstered helm seat. Two footrests—one of which flips up for standing—and a window that opens for communication with the crew are practical, thoughtful features. My favorite thing at the helm was the sleek black dashboard that curves smoothly into a wide eyebrow, effectively shielding the monitors from glare through the windshield.

The 57 Fly has a three-stateroom, two-head layout. The owner’s stateroom spans the beam amidships with a walk-around queen berth, a four-drawer bureau, and a built-in table with two settees for playing games or enjoying morning croissants. An Isotherm wine locker and a washer-dryer combo are options. The en suite head has a full-size shower with a Lucite door and seat, a Euro-style sink and faucet, and another window with blinds for privacy.

The forepeak VIP stateroom has a queen berth and an equal-size en suite that doubles as a day head. The third stateroom, across the passage, has twin berths that convert into a double.

Although the 57 Fly is designed with owner-operators in mind, there’s air-conditioned crew quarters abaft the engine room. The cabin has a single berth, a head and space for handling lines. It could also serve as a private area for a teenager, be used for stowage or act as a work area.

Power for the Cruisers 57 Fly comes from a pair of Volvo Penta IPS950 pod drives, powered by 725 hp, six-cylinder common-rail D11 diesels with twin-entry turbos. This combination provides more than enough power to push the 57 Fly past the 30-knot mark, even in the choppy Gulf Stream conditions we experienced. At a cruising speed of 25 knots, the engines sip 63 gallons per hour, giving the 57 Fly a range of about 250 nautical miles. If you’re not in a hurry, cruising at 9 knots increases the range to approximately 700 nm.

On the water, the 57 Fly is a true pleasure. Whether running up-sea or cross-sea, the yacht handles with aplomb, thanks to the standard Seakeeper 9 gyrostabilizer and the hull design by Donald Blount and Associates. Returning to the marina after our offshore excursion, the joystick with pod drives made maneuvering into tight spaces a breeze, with no white-knuckle moments. Two fingers and a twist was all it took.

Let the phrase “water interaction” become part of your boating vocabulary by experiencing the Cruisers Yachts 57 Fly.

Chef’s Delight

The lower galley has acres of stowage and can be fitted with a dishwasher. A nice touch is the Plexiglas backsplash to keep any chef uh-ohs from spilling onto the dinette upholstery. The upper cooking area has a Texan grill, a fridge and an ice maker.

A Place for Everything

The foredeck is seamanlike, with a Quick vertical windlass and 200 feet of chain tucked out of sight, a washdown in the anchor locker, and a pair of clamshell lockers on the cabin top to absorb deck gear such as fenders and dock lines.

Pedigree Design

Award-winning Miami-based yacht designer Luiz De Basto engineered the dramatic windows on the 57 Fly, as well as masterminded the decor on the boat we got aboard. The ocean-sand oak draws on his background of more than 200 boats and superyachts over 30 years.

2008 Tiara Yachts 5800 Sovran – Dreamscape – St. Petersburg, FL.

Dreamscape, a 2008 Tiara Yachts 5800 Sovran, is a 58-foot express cruiser with a two-stateroom, two-head layout and triple-diesel-engine configuration. The yacht accommodates four guests for cruising and is currently listed by Galati Yacht Sales for $625,000.

This model was Tiara’s flagship at the time of launch, with a raked deckhouse, down-swept side windows, a hardtop overhang and a reverse- transom design.

Dreamscape is powered by triple, 435 hp Volvo Penta IPS 600 diesels. The IPS pod-drive system makes for easier close-quarters handling, increased fuel efficiency compared to traditional straight-shaft diesels and reduced vibration, which, in turn, lessens onboard noise.

The yacht cruises around 29 knots, with a reported top speed of 34 knots. The joystick docking system simplifies handling around the dock.

“Wait till you drive it,” came the reply from David Zgrabik, a senior service specialist for Volvo Penta. He had spent countless hours helping to plan and then install the first triple IPS 600 diesel system, the same three 435 hp engines turning azipod units with forward-facing dual-prop drives that would soon be pulling us along at cruising speeds of 30 knots for hours on end. For the next six hours, the Tiara Sovran 5800 was our magic carpet ride, smoothing out the light chop of Lake Erie.” Yachting previously reported.

The cockpit has an L-shaped settee with a high-gloss teak table, a solit setup for alfresco dining. A hydraulic swim platform with an 800-pound-capacity lift provides easy water access. There is also a wet bar with refrigerator, ice maker and electric grill. The foredeck has adjustable sun pads, offering an additional lounging space.

Sliding glass doors lead into the Dreamscape‘s salon, which includes an L-shaped leather settee, two chairs, a pop-up flat-screen TV and a wet bar with wine cooler. Large windows and skylights allow for abundant natural light.

The helm station is located forward with twin adjustable captain’s chairs. Electronics include Raymarine multifunction displays, radar, autopilot and GPS. The IPS joystick and electronic engine controls enhance boathandling. Side windows and a sunroof can be opened for breezes when desired.

Below, the galley has Corian countertops, stainless-steel appliances, a refrigerator/freezer, convection microwave, electric cooktop, dishwasher and upper/lower cabinets for stowage.

The full-beam owners’ stateroom is located amidships with a queen-size island berth, nightstands, an entertainment system and hull-side windows for ocean views. The ensuite head includes a walk-in shower and solid-surface countertops.

The VIP stateroom forward has a queen pedestal berth, under-berth and hanging locker stowage and an overhead hatch with shade and screen. Both staterooms have dedicated entertainment systems.

Where is Dreamscape located? The yacht is currently lying in St Petersburg, FL.

Pardo 38 No Worries
No Worries is a 2023 Pardo 38 that is powered by triple 300 hp Mercury outboards. Top speed is 50 knots. Cruising speed is 35 knots. Courtesy Jeff Brown Yachts

2023 Pardo 38 – No Worries – Newport Beach, CA.

The 2023 Pardo 38 No Worries is a couple-size walkaround cruiser that is currently on the market for $695,000 with Jeff Brown Yachts.

No Worries has triple Mercury 300 hp V8 outboards that provide a reported top speed of 50 knots. Cruise speed is 35 knots. The boat’s Seakeeper gyrostabilizer should help keep the boat stable as a table, while a bow thruster and a joystick help with close-quarters maneuvering.

“The Pardo 38 has a modified-V hull form with spray rails and a 20.5-degree deadrise aft. The ride is precise, a credit to designer Maurizio Zuccheri and Pardo’s in-house team,”  Yachting previously reported.

The vessel’s carbon-fiber center console and T-top contribute to its sleek profile. With a length of 37.92 feet and a beam of 11.81 feet, No Worries accommodates 12 guests for day tripping or four guests for weekend cruises across two staterooms.

“They (The Pardo 38, 43 and 50) all have a distinctive reverse bow, pop-out anchor cradles, high bulwarks capped with teak, carbon-fiber center consoles and T-tops, cockpit galleys, sun pads fore and aft, and aft-deck tables. The 38 just shrinks these elements into an entry-level package,” Yachting previously reported.

The cockpit has a teak sole and includes a dinette and galley for alfresco dining. A Bimini top extends from the hardtop, providing shade when desired. The foredeck has a sun pad with cupholders, making it a great setup for sundowners with friends.

At the helm, there are three Stidd chairs, Simrad electronics suite, including depth sounder, GPs, chartplotter, radar and more.

Belowdecks, the owners’ forepeak stateroom has a double-sized berth. A separate head and shower are shared by all guests. The guest stateroom, located aft, has twin side-by-side berths.

Jeff Brown Yachts notes that No Worries is “Beautifully presented like new” with low hours and LLC ownership.

Grand Banks 43 Europa Peace
Powered by twin 480 hp Cummins 6.7L diesels paired to Zeus pod drives, Peace reaches a top speed of 25 knots. At 10.5 knots, range is 545 nautical miles. Courtesy Grand Banks

Grand Banks 43 Europa – Peace – Newport, Rhode Island

Peace, a 2014 Grand Banks 43 Europa, is a couple-size, Great Loop-ready cruiser with a top speed of 25 knots, two staterooms, two heads and is on the market with Grand Banks for $845,000.

“The Heritage series embodies that thoughtful process of innovation and features an iconic design that has been the mainstay of Grand Banks since 1973. Today there are four models: the 41 EU, 43 EU, 47 EU and 54 EU. When I stepped aboard the 43 EU, I knew instantly that I was on a Grand Banks because of her classic teak interior and evident craftsmanship. But once under way, I fully realized I was not on a Grand Banks of the past,” Yachting previously reported.

Powered by twin 480 hp Cummins 6.7L diesel engines with Zeus pod-drive propulsion system, Peace hits a top speed of 25 knots. During our sea trial, we saw a 10.4 gph fuel burn at 10.5 knots, which resulted in a 564-nautical-mile range with a 10 percent reserve on the yacht’s 600-gallon fuel capacity. The 43 Europa’s hull design from C. Raymond Hunt Associates has allowed engineers to add higher horsepower engines to increase top speeds with better fuel efficiency over previous hull designs.

Peace’s cockpit, which is partially shaded by the flybridge, is roomy and  comfortable with deck chairs laid out on a teak sole. Take a dive off the swim platform or just relax and enjoy the ocean breeze. With its seamless connection to the salon and galley, the cockpit is the perfect spot for guests to lounge and enjoy alfresco dining.

The flybridge has a Bimini top giving owners the option of sun or shade. There is an L-shaped settee with table to starboard and a portside bench-style settee. The aft deck currently supports a tender and davit, but when the tender is launched, the aft deck could be used for catching rays or relaxing with a bottle of wine while watching the sunset over the water. The helm station is on centerline with two seats.

Peace’s salon embodies the classic Grand Banks charm with warm teak joinery in all directions. Windows bathe the space with natural light and keep a connection with the surrounding seascape. The salon has an L-shaped settee with dining table to port and a sofa to starboard. The entertainment systems are integrated discreetly, ensuring the space remains uncluttered. Opening the sliding door to the cockpit creates an open-air environment that extends from the galley to the cockpit.

The galley is located forward of the salon and to port, and is adjacent to the lower helm station. The galley appliances include a two-burner cooktop, microwave, refrigerator and sink. Stowage is plentiful, with well-placed drawers and cabinets that optimize the available space.

The two-stateroom setup includes the master stateroom, located forward, with a queen island berth, flanked by stowage and hanging lockers. Overhead hatches and portlights provide ventilation and natural light, creating a bright and airy feel. The guest stateroom, configured with side-by-side twin berths, is equally well-appointed. Both staterooms are finished with the same rich teak joinery found throughout the yacht. The shared head features a separate shower stall, high-quality fixtures and thoughtful stowage solutions.

Where is Peace located? The yacht is currently lying in Newport, Rhode Island

2021 Tiara Yachts 43 LE – Natural Selection – Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Natural Selection, a 2021 Tiara Yachts 43 LE, has a two-stateroom, one-head layout and is currently listed by HMY Yacht Sales for $849,000.

The boat is powered by triple 450 hp Mercury 450R outboards with approximately 81 hours each. It has a reported top speed of 52 knots and cruises around 35 knots. A Seakeeper SK6 gyrostabilizer provides roll reduction, while Mercury’s joystick control assists with low-speed maneuvering.

“Swing the wheel hard over at cruise speed or while going full tilt, and the yacht’s 21-degree deep-V hull digs in and carves a turn half as wide as virtually any boat this size rigged with inboards and rudders. Dockside handling was above par with the joystick control; in fact, when we returned to a cramped and crowded marina to parallel park with maybe 3 or 4 feet of clearance fore and aft, docking was simply a matter of lining up next to the opening and then nudging the joystick sideways,” Yachting previously reported.

The cockpit includes a rotating lounge that locks into multiple positions and includes a footrest. A fold-down terrace expands the usable space and provides additional water access on the hook. A retractable sunshade, transom grill and removable high-gloss teak table support alfresco dining. There is an upgraded JL Audio system with Fusion head unit. Underwater lights enhance the ambiance when the sun goes down.

Forward, the bow has sun pads with integrated cupholders. Stainless-steel bow rails provide safe transit when accessing the foredeck.

Sliding glass doors connect the cockpit to the salon and galley. The salon is bright and open, thanks to large windows and high ceilings. Air conditioning, rotating helm chairs and sliding doors that open fully to the cockpit allow the salon to serve as a social hub. Galley features include a stainless-steel sink, microwave, Cognac wood-finished refrigerator/freezer drawers and multiple stowage compartments.

The helm electronics setup includes three 16-inch Garmin GPS displays, a Garmin 48-inch Fantom open-array radar, Mercury VesselView, Seakeeper control and an integrated sound-system interface. Opening side windows provide breezes when desired.

Belowdecks, the forward master stateroom includes a queen island berth with stowage below, reading lights, a hanging locker, privacy curtain and flat-screen TV. The second stateroom has a full-size berth and settee. The shared head has a teak shower stall with a glass door, sink and toilet.

Where is Natural Selection located? The yacht is currently lying in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

CLB80: Made for Different Cruising Styles

CL Yachts is adding a fourth model to its B Series: the CLB80, which joins the CLB65, CLB72 and CLB88 flagship. Aboard the CLB80, owners can choose a forward or aft galley. With the latter, there’s a stool-height dining table that can tuck away against the galley counter, becoming a high bar or a side table for different styles of entertaining. Owners also can choose a single or double helm station, depending on how they prefer to cruise. All four guest staterooms are belowdecks, including an amidships master that spans the 22-foot-6-inch beam. The VIP stateroom is forward with a skylight for additional natural light. Saxdor 400 GTO: A New Flagship

Saxdor Yachts is a Finnish yard that was established in 2019. It offers three models: the 270 GTO, the 320 GTO and the recently launched 400 GTO. Note the size of the foldout balcony in the image below; there’s another one on the starboard side of the vessel, substantially increasing the outdoor space when the boat is at anchor. Guests can have snacks or lunch in that shaded section or set out a spread forward on the table beneath open skies. Belowdecks are two staterooms: one forward and one amidships. For cruising families, the shipyard offers the option of adding a kids cabin. Standard power is a pair of 300 hp Mercury Marine V-8s, though the boat is designed for a maximum of 800 hp, if owners want other outboards at the transom.

Cicem TM 37
The TM 37 is the first model in a new line of center-console boats that Vicem is expected to expand in the future.

Vicem TM 37: Sport Fishing in High Style

The TM in the model name of Vicem’s TM 37 stands for “Tuna Masters.” This is a line of center-console boats that the Turkish builder launched earlier this year, with more models expected to come at different lengths overall. Hull No. 1 of the TM 37 is powered by triple 350 hp Mercury Marine outboards that reportedly give eager-to-get-there anglers a top hop of nearly 48 knots. The standard power package is a pair of the 350s, which Vicem says allows for a top speed of about 40 knots. Range is estimated at 350 nautical miles, with a Seakeeper gyrostabilizer as part of the standard-equipment package for more-comfortable time spent on board. Belowdecks are twin berths and a wet head for overnights. Electronics at the helm are by Raymarine.

Cruisers Yachts 55 Fly: Coming this Spring

The 55 Fly is the first model in the new Flybridge series from Cruisers Yachts, which also offers Cantius and GLS series. Expect the official launch of the 55 Fly this spring, with the second model in the Flybridge series on tap for next year. Luiz De Basto collaborated with the Cruisers team on interiors, using the design theme “back to nature in a tech world.” Josh Delforge, vice president of operations and engineering at Cruisers, says that one goal with the 55 Fly was best-in-class water interaction—hence the foldout side platform and sizable swim platform shown in the image below. Power will be twin 725 hp Volvo Penta IPS950s, allowing extra volume to devote to the accommodations for six guests.

Princess Y95: High Style Meets 23-Knot Speed

The Y95 is the new flagship of Princess Yachts’ four-model Y Class of open-flybridge designs in larger sizes. There are five en suite staterooms for a total of 10 guests, with the master spanning the full beam on the main deck. The flybridge is set up for driving and entertaining in comfort. There are twin adjustable helm seats, along with a forward-facing L-shaped seating area for guests. The dining table up top seats 10 people (additional dining space is on the main deck). A bar on the flybridge includes a sink, an electric barbecue, a hob and a drawer refrigerator. Power is a pair of 2,000 hp MAN V-12s that, according to Princess, allow for a top speed of 23 knots. Crew quarters are abaft the engine room, separate from the guest spaces.

Galeon 420 Fly Bone Voyage
Bone Voyage is a Galeon 420 Fly with Volvo Penta D6 engines and a two-stateroom, two-head layout. It’s offered by Curtis Stokes and Associates for $665,000. Courtesy Curtis Stokes

Galeon 420 Fly – Bone Voyage

A Great Loop veteran, Bone Voyage is a 2020 42-foot Galeon motoryacht with a two-stateroom, two-head layout and reliable Volvo Penta power, plus a Fischer Panda 12-kW generator and updated Raymarine electronics. It’s offered by Curtis Stokes and Associates for $665,000.

Bone Voyage has a master stateroom forward with an island queen berth and en suite head with an enclosed shower. The starboard guest stateroom has side-by-side single berths that convert into a double berth, with the head and shower just forward.  For additional sleeping arrangements, the starboard settee in the salon also converts to a double berth if needed.

The lower helm is starboard forward in the salon and is raised one step up from the salon, with a bench seat, Raymarine electronics and an opening window. On the flybridge, there’s a Bimini top for sun protection plus an eisenglass enclosure with the helm to starboard. On the aft deck is a Kenyon barbeque grill, a wet bar, Isotherm refrigerator/freezer, wraparound seating with a table aft and ample stowage.

There are approximately 1,040 hours on the vessel’s twin Volvo Penta D6 engines, which give it a cruising speed of 16 knots and a top hop of 30 knots. It also has a shallow-water-friendly draft of just 3 feet, 9 inches.

Yachting previously wrote: “At first glance, the flybridge dominates this 42-footer’s profile, extending all the way over the aft cockpit, with a sharply angled radar arch that owns the space above the long, dark, juxtaposed windows of the salon and curves of the hull. Every flybridge motoryacht under 60 feet is fighting the same design battle: maximizing the interior space and ambient light without designing topsides that look overly boxy. It’s a challenge to balance form and function, but this Galeon has hit the mark.”

Where is Bone Voyage located? The yacht is currently lying in Vero Beach, Florida.

Climb aboard the Ruth Pearl and up a few steps from the swim platform to the aft cockpit where guests can be seated on the U-shaped settee with table, or belly up to the aft-galley bar on two white padded stools. The cockpit is very spacious for a small party while cruising, but if the sun becomes an issue, extend the electric awning to add shade. Take a dive off the swim platform, or an onshore excursion to a private beach for lunch in a 10’5″ tender mounted on a lift attached to the swim platform. Feel like you need a little rinsing off after a swim? There is an outdoor shower to keep guests from having to enter the lower deck heads. Owners have access to an electric grill and ice maker in the cockpit with the aft-galley just through a set of sliding glass doors.

The galley is centrally located between the cockpit and salon, allowing owners to easily entertain guests in both areas. Lock open the sliding glass doors, open a large window pane in the galley and you will have an open-air environment throughout the cockpit, galley and salon. The galley has a built-in microwave, dishwasher, stove, ice maker and expandable table along with a U-shaped gunmetal settee with table in the salon. Windows flanking the salon allow natural light to illuminate the galley, salon and helm. Additional sunlight is available through a sunroof that can be opened above the helm and dining area.

Rainy evening? Relax in the salon while watching TV on a retractable flat-screen TV with a Bose surround-sound system. No need to head back in, the storm will pass. The salon is laid out in blackened oak and tan oak interior with an amtico sole in walnut and a gunmetal upholstered loveseat. Grab a bottle of wine from the 120v wine captain, open the power sunroof and open a few windows to let the breeze flow through.

The forward helm is located starboard side across from the U-shaped settee with a captain’s chair large enough to seat two. Ruth Pearl was outfitted with the Raymarine electronics package, sonar, 6 kW HD open-array radar, two Axiom XL 16″ displays with remote, joystick remote docking, VHF radio, FLIR and autopilot, ensuring the captain will have a comfortable and safe cruise. Two large windshields as well as large side windows to port and starboard allow the captain a full view of the surroundings.

Retire in the evening to three staterooms with two heads that will comfortably sleep six. The master stateroom is a carpeted, full-beam suite with a walkaround queen island berth with an upgraded therapeutic foam mattress. Owners will find plenty of stowage in the end tables on each side of the berth, oak cabinets, hanging lockers and in the portside cafe table with under-seat stowage. Comforts include opening porthole, blinds, mirrors and a private en-suite head with fully enclosed shower and electric toilet. The VIP stateroom has a queen berth with an upgraded therapeutic mattress, oak cabinetry, hanging lockers and private access to the guest head. Guest stateroom has twin-sized berths, oak cabinetry and shared access to the guest head.

Where is Ruth Pearl located? The yacht is currently lying in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Cruisers Yachts in Wisconsin has launched a Flybridge series as an evolution of its Cantius series.

The Flybridge series is expected to include three yachts, starting with the 55 Fly. The builder worked with designer Luiz Debasto on the designs, which Cruisers Yachts says are intended to blend organic shapes in earth and ocean tones, complemented with natural fibers.

“We set out to create a super fly, a yacht that exceeds all expectations of Cruisers flybridges of the past,” Josh Delforge, vice president of operations and engineering, stated in a press release. “Our design team focused on delivering the best-in-class water interaction, a superior flybridge entertaining space and a fresh interior design direction, all wrapped in a futuristic evolution of the Cantius DNA.”

When will the 55 Fly debut as the first model in the Cruisers Flybridge series? It’s expected to premiere in spring 2024, with another model in the Flybridge series on track to make its debut in 2025.

Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS Reviewed https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yachts/cruisers-yachts-50-gls-reviewed/ Thu, 28 Sep 2023 17:00:06 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=61000 The nearly 50-knot Cruisers 50 GLS is equal parts pure performance and sheer fun.

When I reviewed the Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS two years ago, I decided that GLS must mean “great little ship.” With the 50 GLS flagship, I know it means “greater little ship.”

It actually means Grand Luxury Sport, which is also an apt description of the Cruisers GLS “adventuring” series. Cruisers, now owned by MarineMax, has paid attention to how we use our boats. The 50 GLS is a bowrider on steroids, an express cruiser with entertaining ambitions, an overnighter with comfort and a performance boat (49.6 knots) with the oomph to yank skiers or tubers with aplomb.

The 50 GLS is powered by three 600 hp Mercury Verado V-12 outboards. When I put the hammer down from idle, I was literally shoved back into the comfy, Ultraleather helm seat. And the yacht has fold-down terraces (Cruisers calls them beach doors) on each side of the cockpit, whose beam expands from 14 feet, 6 inches to more than 21 feet. That’s about the beam of many 95-foot yachts. The combination—with the outboard engines being out of the way on the transom—creates a cockpit that feels like a ballroom filled with dining and seating options.

This is also a good-looking yacht, with a black slash on the topsides to conceal the windows, and a windshield that rakes steeply into the sleek hardtop with a sunroof. For passengers boarding from dockside, the transom platform is wide and one level to the cockpit. That transom on the 50 GLS that I got aboard had a pair of Kenyon grills (one is standard). This positioning means smoke from charred steak won’t intrude into the cockpit. Just forward of the barbecue is a forward-facing settee with twin removable tables for dining or cocktails.

In the forward corner of the cockpit are an L-shaped counter, dual Isotherm fridges, an ice maker and a sink. Opposite this space—on an 8-inch raised platform—is another dining table, this one facing a 55-inch pop-up TV.

A secure walkway to port leads to the bow, which has three seats with headrests and an electric table that rises for cocktails or meals on the hook. This cockpit is deep (40 inches) and safe for kids. A cooler with a chiller plate (read no ice needed) is tucked under a seat.

At the helm is an intuitive dashboard with three 19-inch Simrad monitors and a joystick linked to the Side-Power bow thruster. We used that Mercury JPO joystick to make painless work of a normally tough situation: a fierce side wind, a strong current and a skinny dock. Dock-watchers hoping for a Sunday afternoon show will be disappointed.

And the 50 GLS is about more than alfresco living. A sliding hatch (with a screen) leads into a bright cabin with overhead and side windows. A counter holds a microwave and a fridge for morning coffee and warm croissants without having to leave the cabin.

Forward is a stateroom, with a wider-than-queen berth, hanging lockers and privacy from French doors. Headroom is a surprising 6 feet, 8 inches, which adds to the airy feeling. Just aft and to starboard is the head, with a separate stall shower that is also oversize: 4 feet by nearly 3 feet.

Another stateroom is tucked under the cockpit with a pair of berths that can be configured as seats or as a “playpen,” with a TV on the bulkhead. This space is perfect for an afternoon nap for kids, and it’s comfortable (I stretched out with no problem) for adult overnighters, though it won’t encourage them to linger.

Underway, the 50 GLS is simply great fun. Hammer down, it came up fast and flat, regardless of whether we were using no tabs or letting the auto-tab system think for us. The boat topped out at 49.6 knots. For a 50-footer weighing some 19 tons, going 85 feet per second is impressive.

Even better, the 50 GLS felt solid, and I had a chance to check out the bottom before it hit the water. There are two full-length strakes below the waterline. Our result was a soft ride through a 2-to-3-foot wake when we circled back at full throttle. The spray was thrown far to the side, thanks to wide chine flats. This yacht begged to be treated like a 20-foot bowrider. We carved some swoops just for fun.

Those swoops were accomplished in silence too. My decibel meter read just 58 at idle (65 dBs is the level of normal conversation), and it got no higher than 85 at full throttle. The federal government’s safety agency says that’s the noise level of a vacuum cleaner.

The 50 GLS I got aboard had a Seakeeper 6 gyrostabilizer (we didn’t need it) and a 16 kW Kohler genset to provide air conditioning all day at anchor or at the sandbar. This equipage was under a hatch in the cockpit. Access via a ladder was outstanding, with room left to stow all the gear, from fenders to inflatable toys.

Everything said and done, the Cruisers Yachts 50 GLS is an on-the-water delight: fast and fun with varied entertaining spaces, thoughtful luxuries and the facilities for comfortable overnighting. This yacht truly is a greater little ship.

Major Power

Mercury’s V-12, 7.6-liter engine is revolutionary because the lower-unit gear case is steerable. A two-speed transmission provides torque in first gear and efficiency in second, and the dual-prop design provides solid bite, even in hard turns.

Catching Air

The 50 GLS has power-operated “vent windows” like those on older cars, providing a steady flow of controllable air. Electric side windows add to the breeze, as does the opening sunroof in the hardtop. Opening ports in the staterooms are another fresh-air plus.

Built Right

Cruisers Yachts uses a mix of modern and traditional methods in the 50 GLS, including hand-laid and resin-infused fiberglass for specific areas. The stringer grid that supports the interior components is wood-free with all-foam coring for a long-life, no-rot hull.
