Numarine has launched the second hull in its 30XP series, a 98-foot explorer yacht equipped with diesel-electric hybrid propulsion. Like its sistership Minella, which debuted at the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2024, the new 30XP offers an efficient, low-noise cruising experience with a range of 3,500 nautical miles at 8 knots. Unlike Minella though, this hull sports a more traditional white exterior and a revised interior palette in light tones and dark accents.

Designed by Can Yalman, the raised-pilothouse yacht balances performance and comfort with a focus on space and sea connection. The yacht’s 213-gross-ton volume is used to great effect, especially in areas like the semi-open beach club, where fold-down platforms expand the deck space to 46 square meters. A portside tender garage houses a 5.65-meter diesel tender, while the raised deck overhead creates a unique lounging area just steps from the water.

The flybridge features space for a wet bar and multiple social zones, and the foredeck is fitted with a broad sun pad. Inside, full-height windows flood the salon with natural light, and the master suite is located forward on the main deck for enhanced views and privacy. Below, four en suite guest staterooms offer generous accommodation.

The hybrid system consists of twin electric motors powered by four 108-kW diesel generators, delivering a top speed of 13 knots and notable efficiency at low speeds. Sound levels in the guest cabins remain below 40 decibels underway—quieter than a soft rain—thanks to acoustic design by Silent Line. Optional solar panels, eco-friendly materials and onboard waste management systems further support the builder’s sustainability goals.

Sometimes, innovation is born of necessity. Other times, it comes simply from sheer annoyance.

That was the overriding feeling—annoyance—that boaters had for years about noisy generators in pristine coves and on placid bays.

There was belching. And spewing. Endless sleep interruptions from the droning. Somebody cranking the damn thing on at 5:30 in the morning like some kind of harborwide alarm clock built by human-hating robots in machinery hell. More than a few of nature’s most untouched, most peaceful locations seemed positively corrupted by the ruckus of generators, again and again and again.

Even still, the idea of overnighting on a boat without a generator was anathema to a lot of people. No generator would mean no air conditioning. No reading lights. No power for whatever electronic device they were most addicted to at the time.

All of this is why several forward-thinking boatbuilders are now embracing technology such as lithium-phosphate batteries, giving boaters a way to have the power they need without the annoyance—or the expense—of having to continuously run a generator on board.

Horizon Power Catamaran

Horizon Power Catamarans is one such boatbuilder. The company was founded in 2009, has sold more than 60 hulls, and has handled more than 500 charters. All of that business came with feedback from occasional and regular boaters alike about what would make their experience even more hassle-free, leading up to the boatbuilder’s turn toward generator-free cruising options.

“Welcome to silent living!” the builder announced in early 2024 as it made a new power-management package a standard feature on its PC52, PC60, PC68 and larger custom power-catamaran models.

Each of the catamarans will have a Victron Energy lithium-phosphate battery package paired with a Termodinamica variable-speed air-conditioning system. The idea, the builder says, is for boaters to have minimal generator usage and maximum efficiency—such as air conditioning, refrigerator and freezers being able to run for 20 hours on batteries alone.

“This, coupled with other areas of energy savings, such as propane-fueled cooking, solar-powered systems and large alternators, goes a long way in mitigating energy consumption while making for an extremely comfortable and enjoyable cruising experience overall,” says company founder and CEO Richard Ford.

Another boatbuilder working on similar power solutions is Two Oceans Marine. It’s based in Cape Town, South Africa, and has been building boats since 1989. A partnership with the HMY Yachts network of dealers in the United States includes the Two Oceans 555 power catamaran, which owners can order with an Off-Grid Package that’s designed to provide power without the noise of running a generator.

The Off-Grid Package includes eight 400-watt solar panels, a 50 kW Victron Energy lithium-iron-phosphate house battery bank, and 9 kW Integrel Systems PTO power generators on the main engines. (PTO stands for power take-off generator. It’s tech that’s often used in agriculture and by emergency services in areas without electricity.)

In less-geeky terms, this package gives boat owners an entire technology setup with generator-free cruising and living aboard in mind.

“This translates into the ability to power all seven air conditioners continuously for over eight hours in sweltering South Florida conditions,” says Dave Jirikovic, the brand manager handling the Two Oceans line for HMY Yachts. “The Integrel system’s PTO generators, driven by the main engines, operate maintenance-free and allow for efficient and high-speed recharging of the house storage bank.”

Jirikovic calls the package “a glimpse into the future of boating.” He might be right.

Are the generator’s days numbered? In some boaters’ minds, the answer appears to be a definitive, happy and whisper-quiet yes.

Supersede’s Marine Board is a replacement for wood-based marine-grade plywood. The company builds its Marine Board by extruding bulk post-industrial recycled plastics. The manufacturing process eliminates adhesives and volatile organic compounds. Because Marine Board is recyclable, Supersede regrinds and re-extrudes its solid manufacturing waste into fresh sheets. Better still, Supersede’s buyback program lets users sell unwanted cuts—and full sheets—back to Supersede.

Shane Kenyon, Supersede’s co-founder and head of engineering, says it was a challenge to create a composite equivalent to marine-grade plywood: “This challenge then boiled into four sub-challenges of maintaining cost, weight, recyclability and performance.”

The solution required real-world testing and creating an intensive benchmark catalog of existing marine boards. “Using that benchmark catalog as a design matrix,” he says, “we drove all engineering decisions and development through a constant feedback loop of CAD design, finite element analysis simulation, manufacturing feasibility and costing exercises.”

Supersede Marine Board
Supersede’s standard-size sheets measure 4-by-8 feet and come in ½- or ¾-inch thickness. Supersede

In addition to offering superior strength and a longer lifespan than plywood, boatbuilders can shape Marine Board using standard saws and drills. Marine Board can also be painted, glued and veneered, and its weight is comparable to wood-based plywood.

Marine Board is UV-stable, resistant to mold, rot, splinters and termites, and waterproof. Its bidirectional strength and lifespan are superior to plywood’s. Baglietto has launched the 133-foot L’Instant. It’s the first hybrid-propulsion Dom 133 from the Italian builder, and the first of what are expected to be eight yachts launching this year.

Exteriors on L’Instant are by Stefano Vafiadis with interiors by Leonardo Santi.

The hybrid propulsion system is made with Lloyd’s Register-certified components. It includes a diesel endothermic engine and what Baglietto calls an “ultra compact hybrid unit” fitted with an electrical motor installed between the main engine and the gearbox.

The two Caterpillar C32 Acert diesel engines are compatible with HVO biofuels from renewable energy sources, and the electrical propulsion motor can be used for silent cruising and as a shaft generator system to optimize consumption, reducing the number of operating hours of the traditional diesel gensets.

When the yacht is in full electric mode, according to Baglietto, the high-energy-density battery packs allow for nine hours at anchor with zero emissions, in complete silence.

Baglietto L’Instant
L’Instant replaces the traditional sundeck pool with an outdoor gym and has redesigned staircases for improved accessibility across all decks. Inside, the builder uses eco-friendly materials, including recycled ocean plastics. Courtesy Baglietto

The interior is also highly customized and includes a focus on sustainability, with carpets and fabrics obtained by recycling plastic found in the ocean, and from regenerated industrial waste. Baglietto satisfied numerous owner requests, including moving the galley from the main deck to the lower deck, making room for a VIP stateroom that can be accessed from the central lobby. The VIP and the master stateroom, which is forward, both have automated windows for fresh air. Custom-made opening portholes in the guest staterooms belowdecks serve the same purpose.

Baglietto’s team also redesigned the Dom 133’s internal staircases on the main deck and in the crew quarters to connect all decks up to the sundeck, where the bar is fitted with a dumbwaiter for easy service and the pool area is replaced by an outdoor gym.

Since the hybrid system took up additional technical space compared to a conventional propulsion setup, the 19-foot tender and the two PWC are on the upper deck, forward of the wheelhouse. Baglietto installed a davit for hauling and launching.

Interiors aboard L’Instant include light eucalyptus and walnut woodwork. Upholstery is neutral with touches of turquoise, one of the owner’s favorite colors. The Italian brands Flexform, Cassina, Vitra and Softhouse are all used in the styling, also at the owner’s request.

With its hybrid propulsion system, what kind of speed can the Baglietto L’Instant achieve? According to the shipyard, the yacht’s maximum speed is 17 knots when using the diesel engines, and almost 10 knots in full electric mode.

Italian boatbuilding powerhouse Azimut Benetti has signed a partnership with Ogyre, which recovers plastic waste from the sea. The idea is to work on collecting plastic from the oceans, as well as to start a feasibility study for a new marine waste collection hub in Tuscany, Italy.

Goals include collecting 18,000 pounds of plastic from the seas in 2025 through the work of local fishing communities. At the same time, the feasibility study will explore how Ogyre could operate a marine waste collection hub in a way that involves institutions and the community, thus spreading a greater culture of respect for the environment.

The move by Azimut Benetti comes after numerous other actions to support sustainability in yachting. The group’s brands, most notably, have helped to reduce carbon dioxide emissions on yachts. The marine waste collection hub in Tuscany would be located between Livorno and Viareggio, both major boatbuilding regions in Italy.

According to Azimut Benetti, the partnership with Ogyre is intended to protect the oceans on a global level. The waste collection will be concentrated in three countries: Italy, Brazil and Indonesia, which are seriously affected by pollution.

The Mediterranean Sea’s semi-closed geography makes it more vulnerable to plastic accumulation, while in Brazil and Indonesia, there are highly contaminated rivers that transport large quantities of waste to the sea.

Ogyre collaborates with local fishing communities, providing them with equipment, logistical support, training and financial compensation. This operating model not only promotes the protection of the oceans, but also creates income opportunities and strengthens the resilience of coastal communities.

How much plastic is out there in the oceans, waiting to be collected? According to a World Wildlife Fund report, the Mediterranean has a density of microplastics that’s four times higher than the Pacific “plastic island.” Plastic makes up 95 percent of the waste present in the Mediterranean, in particular, along the stretch of sea by Tuscany, where sea currents are fed by the mouths of the Arno, Tiber and Sarno rivers.

Mercury’s Avator 75e and 110e are the company’s biggest electric outboards to date. Both have transverse-flux motors, three-blade aluminum propellers and recycled materials. The 75e can be ordered with a tiller or digital remote controls, while the 110e has digital controls. Both come in different shaft lengths. Owners can spec Avator 75e and 110e outboards with two to four external 5,400-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion batteries; these are paired to Mercury’s 5400 Power Center, merging power from the batteries and distributing it to the motor.

“Replacing a 6-gallon gas tank with at least two 5,400 kWh batteries isn’t the easiest task,” says Dan Ryks, Mercury’s senior category manager for electrification. “You have to find space for the batteries, and you need to consider their weight in order to deliver the best overall vessel performance.” The solution is flexible design. “The modularity of the 5,400 kWh batteries and the smaller 5400 Power Center provides boatbuilders and dealers with multiple configuration options for vessel installations,” Ryks says. The batteries can be installed horizontally or vertically.

Mercury Marine’s Avator 75e and 110e outboards deliver 10 hp and 15 hp, respectively. SmartCraft Connect modules facilitate communication with the Mercury Marine app, which displays the available range and other data. The 5,400 kWh lithium-ion batteries recharge using AC power and a 520-watt or 1,050-watt Avator charger. The 520W charger replenishes two batteries in 20 hours; the 1,050W takes less than 10 hours to recharge.
