Designed by award-winning naval architect Ward Setzer, the 2021 Outer Reef 620 Trident named Oasis has just 800 hours on its twin 550 hp Cummins QSB 6.7 diesel engines with Zeus pod drives. The interior has oak veneer throughout the three-stateroom, four-head layout with optional crew quarters. The open-plan galley/salon arrangement feels large for a boat of this size, according to the broker. The stand-up engine room and lazarette area offer easy owner maintenance and ample storage. Yachting previously wrote: “Often, sturdily built world girdlers double down on all things redundant and beefy, sometimes sacrificing a sleek aesthetic in the process. At the same time, yachts considered party platforms may put bluewater attributes on the back burner. But there does exist a nexus of the two lines of thought, and the Outer Reef 620 Trident is a prime example. She is a vessel that has Outer Reef’s oceangoing pedigree at her core and is also easy on the eyes.

The 620 is a great trawler built to help ambitious owners step up from casual cruising to serious voyaging and still look good on the water. Outer Reef sees the Trident line as a stepping stone for yachtsmen who are coming out of first or second boats and who may want to cruise the world. Logically, many of these customers would encompass a younger demographic, and Tridents are built to accommodate their needs.”

Introducing the Outer Reef Yachts 780 Adventure https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yachts/new-yachts-outer-reef-780-adventure/ Fri, 18 Apr 2025 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=69455 A steel-hulled 78-foot Adventure Series flagship hits the water from the Florida-based yacht builder, Outer Reef.

Coastal cruising is an option in most places thanks to the 780’s 6-foot-3-inch draft. Courtesy Outer Reef Yachts

When most boaters think of Outer Reef Yachts, they think of traits such as long range, bluewater capability and an FRP hull. Now the Florida-based builder is expanding into the fast-displacement explorer-yacht sector with its 780 Adventure, a steel-hulled 78-foot yacht that will be constructed in a yard in the Netherlands that Outer Reef acquired in a recent merger with Lynx Yachts.

This flagship of the Adventure Series is being built to cruise the most remote destinations. Hull No. 1 is expected to debut at yacht shows this year. Outer Reef CEO Jeff Druek says the 780 Adventure is a direct response to increasing demand for explorer yachts: “We’ve seen a growing interest in adventure yachting, particularly among a younger generation of cruisers eager to explore remote and extraordinary destinations. Outer Reef owners have already embarked on remarkable journeys to places like Alaska, the Great Barrier Reef, the Galapagos Islands, Patagonia, Greenland, Iceland and multiple passages around Cape Horn, the southernmost tip of Tierra del Fuego in Chile. This shift highlights a desire for unique, transformative experiences, and Outer Reef is committed to leading the way in these exciting new developments.”

Natural light streams into the salon, which has facing settees and picturesque views. Courtesy Outer Reef Yachts

This yacht also represents a significant design departure for Outer Reef, which aims to appeal to those younger buyers. A modern touch on the interior is the volume-enhancing windows that create a bold first impression. Out on deck, the foredeck can stow a RIB and water toys, giving energetic cruising families plenty of options for playtime on the hook. The main deck aft is set up for entertainment and relaxation, with two L-shaped settees flanking the space forward and a transom settee aft. The flybridge is dedicated to entertaining. (The 780’s only helm station is on the main deck.) This flybridge setup allows for a lounge pad aft beyond the hardtop, alfresco dining amidships, and multiple lounge areas forward.

According to the builder, the combination of a fast-displacement steel hull and optional Cat C32 diesels gives the 780 Adventure an estimated 18-knot top speed, while the standard twin 425 hp Cummins diesels should deliver a nearly 3,200-nautical-mile range cruising at 7 knots. The 780 is also equipped with fin stabilizers that have zero-speed functionality for added stability underway and at anchor.

The main-deck interior has the salon lounge area aft, with L-shaped sofas to port and starboard. A high-low table to port offers an interior dining spot. The main-deck galley and pilothouse are past the forward bulkhead.

For owners looking to combine modern aesthetics and creature comforts with the ability to throw a pin at a chart and go, the Outer Reef Yachts 780 Adventure provides the best of both worlds.

Your Way

Thanks to a high level of maneuverability and docking technology, the 780 Adventure is owner-operator-friendly, but also has space for a small crew in case owners want to enjoy a little more relaxation while cruising.

Belowdecks

The 780 Adventure is designed with flexibility in mind. Accommodations can vary depending on what an owner needs for different cruising plans with family and friends. The builder offers the model in a four-or five-stateroom layout.

Flex Space

While most of the outdoor space on the 780 Adventure is dedicated to entertaining, the foredeck is set up for a RIB tender and PWC stowage. Owners can also opt for seating.

Outer Reef Yachts has introduced the 540 Adventure, hot on the heels of the 780 Adventure model that premiered in autumn 2024 following Outer Reef’s strategic merger with the Dutch shipyard Lynx Yachts.

Similar to the 780 Adventure, the 540 Adventure is designed and engineered in the Netherlands by Bernd Weel Design. It has additional engineering by Studio Delta Naval Architects and interiors by Julian Moore Design.

Accommodations include three staterooms, with a full-beam master amidships and two heads, while optional crew quarters can be configured as a lazarette. Courtesy Outer Reef Yachts

What’s different about the 540 Adventure is that it will be built in FRP, whereas the 780 Adventure is constructed with a steel hull. Power on the 540 Adventure will be a pair of 600 hp Volvo Penta D8 diesels with conventional drive-shaft propulsion, ZF transmissions and joystick controls. The yacht’s projected range is 2,000 nautical miles to allow for long-range and coastal cruising.

Additional equipment includes Humphree stabilizers and interceptors, a 16 kW Northern Lights generator, a Side-Power electric bow thruster with dual station controls, and a MarineAir air conditioning system.

Outer Reef Yachts created the Adventure line with a goal of appealing to younger clients who are looking for something more contemporary and expedition-spirited than the company’s extensive line of Classic models. The shipyard offers five lines of yachts in total, also including the M Class, S Class and Trident Series lines.

Inside, the layout on the 540 Adventure  has three staterooms, including a full-beam amidships master stateroom. There are also two heads. Crew quarters are optional aft, or owners can outfit that space as a lazarette.

“The launch of the 540 Adventure is a milestone for Outer Reef Yachts as we continue to innovate and respond to the needs of today’s long-range yacht owners,” Jeff Druek, president and CEO of Outer Reef Yachts, stated in a press release. “This model exemplifies our commitment to designing and building yachts that combine exceptional performance, rugged capability and comfort. We are thrilled to bring this exciting new option to the market and look forward to welcoming a new generation of Outer Reef owners.”

What are the key specs for the Outer Reef 540 Adventure? Length overall is 56 feet, 5 inches. Beam is 17 feet, 8 inches, and the draft is 4 feet. Displacement is 34.5 tons.

The motoryacht is set up with optional 1,136 hp Caterpillar C-18 diesels (985 hours), providing fuel-friendly hull speeds of 9 to 10 knots, with a cruising speed of 17 knots.

This long-range cruiser is built with a hand-laid FRP hull and PVC-core sandwich construction above the waterline. A vinylester barrier coat provides osmosis protection, while a simulated planked hull gives Smile Smile Smile an ageless aesthetic. The hull is reinforced with full-length longitudinal stringers and athwartship stringers for added structural integrity and backbone. Below the waterline, there are five coats of epoxy primer and two coats of antifouling paint. Molded rub rails with stainless-steel capping further enhance the yacht’s bluewater pedigree.

Reinforcing that last statement, about 10 percent of Outer Reef owners cruise to highly remote destinations, some have even voyaged around Cape Horn.

Onboard accommodations include four staterooms and five heads, with one cabin dedicated to crew. Although most owners are likely to be owner-operators.

The main deck provides a layout for entertaining and relaxation. The aft deck is teak and has built-in FRP bench seating and stowage beneath, as well as a sliding walnut table with stainless-steel bases for al fresco meals on the hook. A wet bar with a U-Line fridge makes for easy access to refreshments, reducing trips to the galley forward on the main deck.

A transom door leads to the extended swim platform, which has an Armstrong recessed four-step dive ladder and removable stainless-steel safety rails.

  • 43″ Sony 4K HDR LED TV added to flybridge with a custom removable mount and storage under the flybridge helm, connected to DirecTV and Fusion FB stereo (forward and rear)

A stairway from the aft deck leads to the flybridge, where a Rainier Glass enclosure provides protection from the elements, especially helpful when cruising during shoulder seasons and at cooler latitudes. The flybridge also accommodates a kayak rack and a stowage area for the included 14-foot AB DLX tender, which is powered by a 70 hp Yamaha outboard. The tender’s setup includes teak decking, a Fusion stereo, a Garmin navigation system with depth sounder, a VHF radio and custom deck stowage. Additional flybridge upgrades include a Sub-Zero clear ice maker and a movable chock system for securing a SeaDoo with tie-down pad eyes.

Other technical enhancements include two joystick remote controls for the FLIR thermal camera, LED courtesy and overhead lighting throughout the aft deck and Aqualuma underwater lighting. A Glendinning 100-amp Cablemaster with 100 feet of cable means convenient shore-power access, with an additional 50-amp shore power inlet available.

“There is nothing more satisfying than to build a yacht that is not only luxurious and comfortable for everyday cruising, but that also meets the highest of standards for the most treacherous of journeys,” says Jeff Druek, president and CEO of Outer Reef Yachts, who wonders which yachtsman will call him with a cruising dream next.
