Athos, a 210-foot Holland Jachtbouw that is one of the world’s most impressive sailing yachts, has joined the Fraser charter fleet. The yacht is heading to the Bahamas, Caribbean and Bermuda this spring ahead of accepting bookings in the unusual destination of Greenland this summer—part of the current owner’s program of using the yacht to visit remote destinations.

Launched in 2010 from the Dutch shipyard and most recently refitted in 2022, Athos is the world’s largest privately owned two-masted schooner. The amenities listed on board since the time of launch rival what guests find on some power-driven superyachts, with top-quality construction and technology systems.

The award-winning refit was done at Huisfit, which in 2019 took over the Holland Jachtbouw facility where Athos was originally built. The refit included extending the 203-footer to 210 feet by way of the stern overhang.

On deck, the cockpit layouts were redesigned, and a new forward navigation deckhouse was added. New booms, new sails and carbon rigging were installed, and all systems were updated. A considerable amount of the interior was replaced or reconfigured and updated, according to the Huisfit team.

“The multiple modifications to Athos have been beautifully done,” owner’s representative Jeremy “Bear” Wynne said at the time of the refit. “The attention to detail and finish is excellent. The new additions and modifications have not only improved the functionality of the yacht, they have also enhanced the appearance.”

The sheer size of Athos is also notable. The yacht’s main mast towers to about 200 feet in the sky.

The charter team at Fraser says the owner has also added a slew of watertoys to extend adventures in remote locations into all the various harbors, nooks and crannies.

What’s the lowest weekly base rate to charter Athos? It’s $220,000 per week, with a high-season base rate of $235,000.

Huisfit has completed a major refit of the 203-foot Holland Jachtbouw Athos, which has been extended to 208 feet length overall during a conversion that changed the yacht inside and out.

Work on the 2010 build included a stern extension; redesigned cockpit layouts; a new forward navigation deckhouse; new booms, sails and carbon rigging; updated systems; and significant interior renovations.

Hoek Design was involved with all the naval architecture and some of the restyling. Peter Mikic Interiors handled the layout and some of the styling.

The new cockpit is wider and longer, and can accommodate 12 people for dining. The space also includes smaller relaxation areas, and tables that can be adjusted for cocktails or dining.

Another major change is to the owners’ stateroom, which was stripped out and rebuilt. It now has additional portholes, two bathrooms instead of one and a new walk-in closet.

In the guest spaces, changes included removing a fireplace and adding a media room. Crew areas were also updated, with a galley rebuild and new appliances in the crew quarters.

How many people worked on the refit of Athos? Huisfit says as many as 50 people were regularly employed on the project for more than a year.

The 116-foot Holland Jachtbouw Whisper, for the second year in a row, has announced plans to donate a portion of summer charter fees to Project Puffin, which helps seabirds in Maine.

The National Audubon Society started Project Puffin in 1973 in an attempt to restore puffin seabird colonies that hunters had destroyed. The puffins have since returned to the region. Back in 1981, the society reported just four pairs of puffins on Eastern Egg Rock. As of 2013, there were about 1,000 pairs nesting on five different islands in Maine.

Whisper will charter this summer in New England at a lowest weekly base rate of $60,000. She accommodates six guests in three staterooms, with a fourth room that can serve as a “nanny cabin” if desired.

Swan 115S

As the owners of investment-grade sailing yachts continue to demand more from their vessels, the world’s top designers and shipyards are responding with smart designs, technological advancements and enhanced construction methods. It is no longer enough to have a yacht that sails well; today’s owners want to win regattas, cruise in comfort for long stretches and enjoy motoryacht-caliber comforts from their cockpits to their staterooms. Swan ‘s new flagship, the 115S, offers all of that and more with a new hull design by German Frers.

Dubois

Dubois: No, that isn’t a superyacht beach club, but it sure does mimic the idea with a great deal of beauty. Dubois designed the 35M Super Stern for an existing owner. A shipyard has yet to be chosen, but delivery is expected in summer 2017. Courtesy Dubois
Perini Navi: The 60M series designed in collaboration with Ron Holland continues to be a winner for the Italian builder, with Hull No. 3 due for delivery in 2017. Hull No. 2, christened Perseus3, is already a charter standout.

Holland Jachtbouw: Andre Hoek designed Topaz, the J8 launched this past summer, based on an unbuilt 1938 Frank Paine design. Look for her in Bermuda in 2017.

Replica of Yankee: An Idea for the Ages

The news that J Class yachts will return to the America’s Cup (yes!) with a regatta in Bermuda in 2017 has top designers and builders thinking about classic yachts they would like to see reborn in time for the event. Dykstra Naval Architects has plans ready for a replica of Yankee. She is based on the Frank Paine design that defended the Cup in 1930, and she incorporates cutting-edge technology. She will be “quite small and light, and very nimble,” according to designer Jeroen de Vos. Holland Jachtbouw has exclusive rights to use the Yankee designs and is ready to begin construction immediately. If built, the replica would become J9 in the J Class fleet and would be eligible to join the other eight J Class yachts that are expected to attend the Bermuda regatta — in what could become the first time in history that more than five J Class yachts have competed against one another.
