Christensen Grade I
The 142-foot Grade I was built in 1995 and most recently refitted in 2018. This Christensen build is currently available for bookings in the Caribbean at a reduced weekly base rate of $120,000 for 12 guests. Courtesy IYC

As an increasing number of new-build charter yachts flood the seasonal hot spots all across the Caribbean and Mediterranean, older vessels can have a hard time standing out in the fleet. They simply don’t have the same look and feel as newer models, and their vintage style sometimes leaves them being wrongfully overlooked when it comes time to book a vacation.

What’s so sad about that reality is that in some cases, those older charter yachts have the better charter programs. The nicest, newest, sexiest yacht in a harbor can have a terrible crew or a lousy chef, while a well-kept, older yacht can have a dialed-in team that provides top-notch service and watersports.

A good example of this phenomenon is the 142-foot Christensen Grade I. Built in 1995 and most recently refitted in 2018, Grade I is currently available for bookings in the Caribbean at a reduced weekly base rate of $120,000 for 12 guests. The yacht has six staterooms, a scuba program for certified divers, and recent client feedback that shows just how special a charter vacation on a yacht of this age can be.

Feadship Ancallia
Ancallia, a 1984 Feadship that was refitted in 2022-23, is accepting bookings this summer in Greece and Turkey for 12 guests. Courtesy Fraser

“I wanted to write you a note to formally thank you for a wonderful week on Grade I,” a client wrote to the crew. “My mother and our family felt right at home and truly relaxed to the point of time slipping right by. However, I would feel remiss if I didn’t share a few thoughts of ours from the experience. From the inside to the outside, every crew member was on point and with a smile! Never a kink in the armor. We had so many laughs, experiences, water sports, crazy sport fishing and culinary delights to the point where I can’t remember them all. Growing up in a boating family, my father always made times spent on the open water super special. He picked our crew members as family members in an effort to create an endless warm experience. We felt those old times again!”

Talk about a glowing recommendation, which was shared by Grade I’s management company, Fraser Yachts. The fact that the yacht originally launched 30 years ago didn’t matter to these charter clients at all.

Like vintage yachts for charter? Check out this Feadship, too: The 151-foot Ancallia is a 1984 build that underwent a rebuild in 2015, and then a refit in 2022-23. Classic Feadship style is still very much on display in this yacht’s exterior lines, with an updated interior that includes modern technology and amenities. Ancallia recently joined the IYC charter fleet and is accepting bookings this summer in Greece and Turkey for 12 guests.

A Yachting contributor recently jested that the most important capacity on board a yacht is the wine cooler capacity. La Sirena is a 2000 Christensen 141-foot Raised Pilothouse currently listed with HMY Yachts for $8.495 million. The 141-foot superyacht has a 10,470-gallon fuel capacity and—maybe most importantly—a 144-bottle wine cellar.

“The 2000 Christensen 141 Raised Pilothouse La Sirena, is an epitome of elegance and sophistication in the world of motor yachts,” HMY Yachts says. “Crafted by the esteemed Christensen shipyard and delivered in 2000, this exceptional vessel underwent a major interior and exterior refit in 2013, ensuring she remains at the pinnacle of luxury and comfort.”

Interior highlights include Honduran mahogany joinery that are highlighted by a unique custom compass rose originally designed for country music legend Jimmy Dean.

“This stunning centerpiece not only adds charm but also once served as a rotating entertainment platform for guests, complete with a piano,” says HMY Yachts. “The salon also features a drop-down projector screen for cinematic experiences.”

The main deck aft on La Sirena is enclosed and the salon area amidships is a spacious 483-square-feet, giving the main deck interior a voluminous feel with the salon doors open. The aft deck space has a teak and holly sole, a custom L-shaped sofa, a high-gloss teak coffee table and an eight-person teak dining table. The salon has additional lounge seating aft and a formal dining space forward.

Christensen 141 La Sirena
The foredeck has bow lounge seating forward, a U-shaped settee aft and enough open space in between for loose lounge chairs. Courtesy HMY Yachts

The main deck country-galley is past the forward bulkhead with a dinette forward and an array of meal-prep amenities, including:

  • Double stainless-steel sink w/ dual faucets w/ Insta hot water
  • Sub-Zero stainless steel refrigerators G90/G50
  • Two Sub-Zero under counter freezers
  • Dual Gaggenau ovens
  • GE Profile microwave/convection oven
  • Miele dishwasher
  • Thermador six-burner cooktop
  • KitchenAid trash compactor

Four well-appointed staterooms reside belowdecks, sleeping up to nine people. The master stateroom has an island king berth, a variety of stowage, two flat-screen TVs, a desk area, a settee and an en suite head. The port and starboard VIP staterooms have queen berths and en suite heads. The final guest stateroom has a queen berth and a Pullman bunk overhead.

Christensen 141 La Sirena
Amidships, the full-beam master stateroom features a king berth, two flat-screen TVs, a desk area, a settee and a his-and-hers en suite head. Courtesy HMY Yachts

The swim platform doubles as a makeshift cockpit space with a fixed table and loose chairs, however, a majority of the exterior entertainment space is on either the flybridge or the foredeck. The after section of the flybridge has lounge seating to port and pwc stowage to starboard. Amidships, a Jacuzzi sits on the centerline with reclining lounge pads on either side. Forward, a six-stool bar is to port and a dining area sits to starboard.

Twin MTU 16V2000 diesels allow La Sirena to jog at 18 knots, an impressive top speed for a 141-foot vessel with a 192-ton displacement. It’s worth noting La Sirena’s starboard engine was overhauled and zeroed out in August 2024.

Some other notable features on board La Sirena include:

  • Six Garmin 8617 17-inch screens
  • Furuno radar
  • Garmin radar
  • Garmin chart plotters
  • Garmin sonar
  • FA-170 AIS
  • Simrad AP 70 autopilot
  • Icom IC-M605 VHF radios
  • Starlink
  • 4,000-pound Davit
  • Two washers
  • Two dryers
  • Crew quarters

With the spring yacht-charter season heating up in the Bahamas, several top companies are promoting yachts that are looking to secure more bookings into the summer months.

First up is the 180-foot Amels Amigos, a 2017 build that is part of the Edmiston charter fleet. The owner will consider short-term charters with a minimum of four days, including during July and August.

Amigos is a Tim Heywood design that accommodates 12 guests in six staterooms, including a full-beam master with a private terrace. The VIP is on the main deck forward with a foldout balcony. Interiors are by Laura Sessa. Up on the sundeck, there’s a countercurrent pool along with alfresco dining shaded by the superstructure. There’s also an outdoor cinema. Down at water level, the beach club has a steam room.

Eros
Eros is a 2019 121-foot Ferretti that was refitted in 2022. The owner is offering a reduced weekly base rate of $130,000. Accommodations aboard are for 10 to 12 guests in five staterooms. Courtesy Fraser

Also headed to the Bahamas with availability this spring is Eros, a 121-foot Ferretti that’s part of the Fraser charter fleet. This yacht is a 2019 build that most recently was refitted in 2022. The owner is offering a reduced weekly base rate of $130,000 to encourage bookings.

Accommodations aboard Eros are for 10 to 12 guests in five staterooms. There also are quarters for seven crew. Also notable is that Starlink is included with each charter, so guests can have online access virtually all the time.

Grade I

Fraser says another yacht in its charter fleet, the 142-foot Christensen Grade I, is also offering a reduced weekly base rate of $130,000 in the Bahamas.

Grade I is a 1995 build that most recently was refitted in 2018. The yacht accommodates 12 guests in six staterooms, and has modern features such as at-anchor stabilizers for guest comfort on board.

Crossed Sabre

Yet another option in the Bahamas is the 144-foot Burger Crossed Sabre, which recently joined the fleet at CharterWorld.

Crossed Sabre has a seven-stateroom layout, including a king-berth stateroom on the main deck, a queen-berth VIP on the bridge deck, and three queen-berth staterooms on the lower deck. The remaining lower-deck staterooms have twin or convertible berths. Notable features aboard Crossed Sabre include a folding balcony in the salon, a sundeck hot tub, and an elevator with wheelchair accessibility.

What else is happening in the Bahamas? The Potlatch Club boutique hotel is expected to open on Eleuthera in June. It’s a property that was popular with visitors in the 1960s and ’70s before it fell into disrepair in the 1980s. It has been restored with garden cottages, ocean-facing cottages and ocean-view villas, along with a restaurant, bar, spa and gym.

Oceanco

With the winter yacht charter season about to kick into high gear in the Bahamas and Caribbean, several top management companies have welcomed notable motoryachts into their fleets.

Perhaps the largest yacht in this category is Samsara, a 290-foot Oceanco that recently joined the Y.CO charter fleet. Brokers are now accepting inquiries for winter charters in the Bahamas and Caribbean (and for summer 2024 bookings in Greenland and Iceland) at a lowest weekly base rate of $1.1 million.

Samsara is a 2015 build that most recently was refitted in 2023, with accommodations for 12 guests in seven staterooms. This yacht has a private owners’ deck, swimming pool, gymnasium, massage room and hair salon, along with an elevator for guest use. “Her seven-cabin layout is ideal for multigenerational groups or two families traveling together,” says David Price of Y.CO Charter Management. “It offers the flexibility to suit many kinds of charter groups.”

Wayfinder Catamaran
Wayfinder is a 223-foot supersized powercat with 11 en suite staterooms. The winter Caribbean lowest weekly base rate is $300,000. Courtesy Edmiston

Meanwhile, over at Edmiston, two notable yachts have joined the charter fleet.

First is Wayfinder, 223-foot powercat that Astilleros Armon built in 2021. This yacht has an unusual layout, with 11 en suite staterooms (nine singles and two with twin berths) for 12 guests, along with quarters for 20 crew. It can be booked as either its own charter yacht or as a support vessel for more traditional charter yachts.

Wayfinder has an open aft deck with a helipad that doubles as a pickleball court. This yacht also has belowdecks storage for six tenders and four Sea-Doos. The lowest base rate to book a week in the Caribbean is $300,000, with inquiries also being accepted for the Mediterranean and other destinations in summer 2024.

Also new to the Edmiston charter fleet is the 164-foot Home, a 2017 Heesen that will be in the Bahamas this winter at a lowest weekly base rate of $245,000.

Heesen Home
Home is a 164-foot Heesen that will be chartering in the Bahamas this winter. Lowest weekly base rate is $264,000. Courtesy Edmiston

Home accommodates 12 guests in six staterooms, and charters with nine crew. Interiors are by Cristiano Gatto—Edmiston describes them as “crisp, light-filled and Ibiza-inspired.” For outdoor fun, the complement of tenders and toys includes a 34-foot Jupiter towed tender, a 21-foot Williams jet tender that can reportedly hit 35 knots, Sea-Doos, standup paddleboards, skis, inflatables, snorkeling gear and scuba equipment.

And, last but not least, IYC has added the 162-foot Christensen Remember When to the charter fleet, with bookings available this winter in the Bahamas at a lowest weekly base rate of $230,000. It’s a 2011 build that was most recently refitted in 2020, with accommodations for 12 guests in six staterooms. An elevator services all four decks, and the full-beam main-deck master has a private office.

Is it too early to call for summer 2024 yacht charter bookings? Nope. In fact, IYC also just welcomed the 90-foot Sanlorenzo SAL to the charter fleet. It’s a brand-new build for 2023 that’s currently accepting bookings for the West Mediterranean, Croatia and Montenegro in summer 2024.

Christensen Reflections
In 2022, Reflections had what the captain calls a “mini-refit” with new soft goods and upholstery. Also added: at-anchor stabilizers for guest comfort on the hook. Courtesy RJC Yachts

Last winter, the owner and crew aboard the 124-foot Christensen Reflections spent the Christmas and New Year’s holidays in Belize. They had such a great time that this winter, they’re going back for several months that could stretch from November through February, if there’s enough interest from charter clients too.

“There are so many little islands to explore,” Capt. Darren Shepherd told Yachting. “It’s never-ending, the amount of stuff. You’ve got the three main atolls, which are stunning, but you also have the outcropping with a national park on the mainland inside the barrier reef. There are hundreds of little islands there where you can hop around. The water is pretty deep. There are coral reefs all over the place.”

Christensen Reflections
Note the way the overhang stretches all the way aft, providing shade to anyone at the dining table below, but without impeding the fresh air or views of the water all around. Courtesy RJC Yachts

He and the crew are especially eager to welcome charter guests who enjoy snorkeling and fishing—both of which the yacht is equipped to offer—as well as scuba diving, which the crew coordinates through local partners. Reflections charters with a 36-foot Everglades tender that can be rigged for whichever activity guests desire.

The snorkeling, he says, is usually a group favorite: “It’s phenomenal. Some of the areas, you have turtles, rays that are 5 feet across; they’re absolutely massive in some of the areas. Sometimes you see the massive spotted eagle rays. The marine life is incredible. Especially out on Lighthouse Reef, you don’t even have to pick one of the dive sites. You just jump in the water, and you see all kinds of things everywhere.”

yacht fishing
The owner and crew are big-time into fishing. They go for marlin, tuna, wahoo and other game fish offshore, and they enjoy fly-fishing closer to the coastline. Courtesy RJC Yachts

He adds that Belize is a great destination for anyone interested in chartering off the beaten track, but without having to fly halfway around the world. The yacht’s owner, he says, had “mostly done the Bahamas and the Caribbean before. After last year, he enjoyed some of the trips so much, he really has that adventure bug.”

Belize Basics

The country is on the Caribbean Sea side of Central America, with Mexico to its north and Guatemala immediately to its south. Just offshore is the world’s second-largest barrier reef (after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef), running along much of the Belize coastline. The Belize Barrier Reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Natural forest still covers about 60 percent of the land in Belize, and much of the country’s land is designated for protection against development.
