Sunseeker’s latest Ocean model designations are based on gross tonnage. Whether we call these yachts enclosed flys or mini tridecks, they offer a lot more volume than conventional designs of the same length. In fact, the second of these models, the Ocean 156, has a length overall of 82 feet, 6 inches, but is substantially bigger in gross tonnage than Sunseeker’s 95 Yacht or 100 Yacht.

The advantage with this approach is the amount of space on the main deck. The helm on the Ocean 156 is on the enclosed upper deck, along with a good-size sky lounge, which means the main salon is all about the guests. It has not only a pair of conventional doors leading aft to the cockpit, but also a similar setup forward, allowing passage to a foredeck terrace with a pair of sofas. Yes, there’s an air seal on those front doors to keep them watertight, and guests get a walk-through experience from bow to stern with 360-degree views through the glazing.

Even the staircases up and down are enclosed in glass. Guests can also walk completely around the main deck outside without having to negotiate steps. Side-deck doors amidships help with guest and crew flow, and the bulwarks amidships have long glass panels for allowing natural light to shine through.

The standard main-deck layout has lounge and dining areas with an open bar and galley to starboard. Some owners may prefer the galley aft or want a main-deck owner’s space. The latter option would increase the yacht’s four staterooms to five but hinder that wondrous walk-through design. Sunseeker says that of the 156s sold to date, 40 percent have amidships galleys, 40 percent have galleys aft, and just one has a main-deck owner’s stateroom.

Interior color schemes are contemporary, with light and dark options from the UK studio Design Unlimited in association with Sunseeker’s in-house creative team.

The Ocean 156’s semi-displacement hull is fulsome. The maximum beam extends slightly farther forward than the beam on the 4-foot-longer Sunseeker 88 Yacht, and the beam itself on the Ocean 156 adds 3 inches. That may not sound like a lot, but I could feel the generosity of space as I moved around the new model.

Sunseeker Ocean 156
Twin 1,650 hp MAN diesels give the Sunseeker Ocean 156 a 25-knot top hop. Courtesy Sunseeker International

Belowdecks, the four guest staterooms are en suite. Three have double berths, and one has twins. The grander double spans the full beam amidships. In the absence of a main-deck owner’s stateroom, it would be the obvious choice, with rectangular picture windows, a forward-facing super-king berth, a sofa, a vanity/desk and a dressing room. Another double-berth stateroom is in the bow with great headroom. Quarters for two crew are near the engine room.

Power-wise, the Ocean 156 is available with twin 1,300 hp MAN V-8 or twin 1,650 hp V-12 diesels. Of the first 15 boats sold to dealers, just one, bound for Hong Kong, had the standard engines with a top reported speed of 20 to 21 knots. The hull that I got aboard had the bigger blocks, delivering 25 knots at half-load, with a likely range of 950 nautical miles at 10 knots or 350 nm at 20 knots.

Sunseeker Ocean 156
Guests get a walk-through experience from bow to stern with 360-degree views through the glazing. Courtesy Sunseeker International

My experience at the upper-deck helm included superb visibility with a real connection to the outside world via a sunroof, a drop-down window to starboard and a sliding door to port. There’s a gyrostabilizer option, but this Ocean 156 had Interceptor trim tabs and electric Humphree All Speed fin stabilizers set farther aft than usual. They reduced pitch and heel through surprisingly quick turns while keeping the bow up.

This yacht is quiet too, with V-boxes that allow the engines to be located well aft. I registered just 57 decibels at 19 knots, and only 59 decibels at full chat at the helm—figures lower than the level of normal conversation. And at speeds below 12 knots, I got even lower readings.

Sunseeker Ocean 156
The standard accommodations layout is four staterooms belowdecks. Owners can add an on-deck master. Courtesy Sunseeker International

For exploring ashore, the yacht’s hydraulic swim platform is large enough for a 14-foot jet tender along with a personal watercraft.

To me, though, it was the interior on the Ocean 156 that made a real statement. I imagine we will soon see other builders copy this design approach. That’s how good it felt to be aboard.

Feeling is Believing

Calling a yacht “light and airy” is a cliché, but light and air are hugely important on board, and the Sunseeker Ocean 156 has a startling amount of both. In my 35 years as a yachting journalist, I have never been aboard any three-deck yacht with an enclosed main deck that had more light, more access to air or better views.

In Motion

Power-wise, the Ocean 156 is available with twin 1,300 hp MAN V-8 or twin 1,650 hp V-12 diesels.

Choices, Choices

The Ocean 156 that I got aboard had twin 17.5-kilowatt Cummins-Onan generators. The standard setup has one 29 kW genset. A bow thruster is also standard, with a stern-thruster option. Owners can also have a second pilot seat, as well as display upgrades such as two 22-inch Garmin touchscreens instead of the standard 16-inch units.

Inside Matters

There was a light, contemporary interior with a white-gray oak sole and midtone walnut veneers on the Ocean 156 I got aboard, which was bound for the Mediterranean. Other schemes include dark walnut, light oak, smoked eucalyptus and flame mahogany. Sunseeker says half the orders so far have been with light schemes.

Dubbed “America’s favorite island,” Hilton Head in South Carolina is a family-friendly destination for outdoor enthusiasts. From beachcombing to biking, golfing and wildlife watching, cruisers can enjoy fun in the sun as well as an exceptional culinary scene in this beloved Southern port.

Things To Do

Hilton Head has long been a premier golf destination. The area has more than 26 championship golf courses, including the renowned Sea Pines Resort and links designed by such celebrated names as Jack Nicklaus, Pete Dye and Robert Trent Jones Sr.

Beach time is also a given on Hilton Head, with its combination of calm waters and 12 miles of white-sand beaches. Coligny Beach Park is perhaps the most popular, thanks to its amenities: free parking, complimentary Wi-Fi access, chair and umbrella rentals, clean facilities and numerous nearby eateries. On the quieter side, Fish Haul and Mitchelville beaches are considered the best for shelling. Burkes Beach is known for its wildlife, particularly sea turtles and dolphins.

Nature lovers should also head to Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge, a vital stop along the Atlantic Flyway that attracts thousands of migratory birds annually and houses a resident menagerie of alligators, deer and large populations of white ibis, herons and other wading birds. Pack sunscreen and insect repellent to explore the island by kayak or by way of its 14 miles of hiking and biking trails.

All told, more than 64 miles of dedicated public pathways and nature trails crisscross Hilton Head. Be sure to pedal over to the red-and-white-striped Harbour Town Lighthouse Museum, the symbol of the island.

Food and Drink

Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks is a family-owned and family-friendly landmark, as prized for its fresh-off-the-boat selections as for its famous hush puppies. For more refined seafood dishes and service with stunning views, reserve a table at Coast in the Sea Pines Resort. Innovative offerings such as habanero shrimp bowls and la plancha dishes complement traditional raw-bar options. For a barbecue fix, stop at One Hot Mama’s BBQ for its signature chocolate barbecue baby back ribs and award-winning chicken wings.

A Lowcountry Backyard Restaurant lives up to its name with seafood purloo, shrimp and grits, grilled pimento cheese and a fried green tomato BLT. Nectar Farm Kitchen—which the locals simply call Nectar —is another popular stop for Lowcountry cooking and bountiful breakfasts paired with a highly praised Bloody Mary. Hilton Head Social Bakery serves divine French pastries such as pain au chocolat and fruit tarts, along with quiches, sandwiches, and desserts including eclairs and key lime pie brulee.

Numarine Launches Second 30XP Hybrid Superyacht https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yachts/numarine-launches-second-30xp-hybrid/ Wed, 06 Aug 2025 19:00:00 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=70858 With hybrid propulsion, airy beach club and a near-silent ride, the 30XP is designed for long-range cruising.

Numarine has launched the second hull in its 30XP series, a 98-foot explorer yacht equipped with diesel-electric hybrid propulsion. Like its sistership Minella, which debuted at the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2024, the new 30XP offers an efficient, low-noise cruising experience with a range of 3,500 nautical miles at 8 knots. Unlike Minella though, this hull sports a more traditional white exterior and a revised interior palette in light tones and dark accents.

Designed by Can Yalman, the raised-pilothouse yacht balances performance and comfort with a focus on space and sea connection. The yacht’s 213-gross-ton volume is used to great effect, especially in areas like the semi-open beach club, where fold-down platforms expand the deck space to 46 square meters. A portside tender garage houses a 5.65-meter diesel tender, while the raised deck overhead creates a unique lounging area just steps from the water.

The flybridge features space for a wet bar and multiple social zones, and the foredeck is fitted with a broad sun pad. Inside, full-height windows flood the salon with natural light, and the master suite is located forward on the main deck for enhanced views and privacy. Below, four en suite guest staterooms offer generous accommodation.

The hybrid system consists of twin electric motors powered by four 108-kW diesel generators, delivering a top speed of 13 knots and notable efficiency at low speeds. Sound levels in the guest cabins remain below 40 decibels underway—quieter than a soft rain—thanks to acoustic design by Silent Line. Optional solar panels, eco-friendly materials and onboard waste management systems further support the builder’s sustainability goals.

As part of a seven-model fleet ranging from 22 to 47 meters, the 30XP fills a niche for owners seeking an efficient, go-anywhere superyacht with serious cruising credentials and a whisper-quiet onboard experience.

Materials and design elements are similar to Riva’s boats, with sapele mahogany, stainless steel and sculptural design throughout. Courtesy Exteta x Riva

Riva Yachts has partnered with Exteta, an Italian outdoor furniture manufacturer, to create the co-branded Exteta x Riva collection of seating, upholstered furniture, tables and more.

Materials and design elements used throughout the collection are exactly what aficionados of the Italian boats have come to expect: sapele mahogany, stainless steel, sculptural design, generous padding and an illusion of weightlessness.

Two different armrests allow for versatility: padded with a slightly curved shape, or wood with a wide, elongated shape reminiscent of a Riva yacht.

Note the level of table gloss in the photograph at left, also a nod to the kind of craftsmanship for which Riva’s vessels have long been known. The wireless stainless-steel lamp is designed to add subtle lighting either on board or in a home on land.

This collection of outdoor furnishings arrives after years of Riva working to extend its brand into everything from clothing and accessories to collectors’ items like humidors and backgammon sets, all available online in the Riva Boutique. With every new element that Riva lends its brand name to, the combination of design and heritage is evident, even in the company’s toy Aquariva and Aquarama model boats for kids.

The idea, the company says, is to inject the allure of yachting into other worlds, such as interior design. It’s a true thing of beauty to see how successful this vision has been and to imagine what might come next.

Massimo Castagna

Award-winning designer Massimo Castagna penned the Exteta x Riva collection. Castagna is the Milan-educated founder of AD architecture studio, and he has collaborated with Acerbis International, Ceccotti Collezioni, Exteta, Gallotti&Radice, Giorgetti, Henge, knIndustrie, Minotti armchairs and sofas, Rossana Cucine and more. Looking for a little privacy? Grab a friend, a few cocktails and walk forward to the foredeck. Relax on a built-in bench-style cushioned settee while enjoying the panoramic views as you cruise down the coastline.

As you enter the full-beam salon, the first thing you notice is the glow from the original woodwork as natural light flows in from the side windows. The furniture has been upgraded to a three cushion sofa with accent pillows and coffee table, two chairs, four drawer antique desk with chair and stowage for personal belongings in a built-in open shelf and cabinet unit ideally arranged to the yacht’s design. Locking open the sliding glass door to the cockpit creates an open-air environment that flows from the cockpit to the pilothouse.

In April, Heesen Yachts announced that Dutch entrepreneur and yachting enthusiast Laurens Last had completed his acquisition of the shipyard. The plan is for strategic expansion in key international markets. “I am honored to take the ownership and ensure the brand continues to flourish for generations to come,” Last announced.

It’s a significant undertaking, given the speed with which Heesen continues to sell and turn out new builds. So far this year alone, the yard announced the sale of the 180-foot Project Angelica and 164-foot Project Orion, delivery of the 180-foot yachts Solemates and Serena, and launch of the 180-foot Project Agnetha.

According to Heesen, yachts in this size range have defied market downturns in other categories. Buyers, the yard says, “are increasingly drawn to vessels that are as versatile and efficient as they are comfortable and stylish.”

Solemates, the most recent delivery, certainly fits that description. It’s the second Heesen for this owner, with significant interior customization by Luca Dini Design and Architecture. Heesen’s team says the interior was transformed enough to feel bespoke, with features such as a redesigned main staircase with acrylic panels embedded with gold flakes and crystals.

“The latest Solemates reflects an evolution of an already great product,” says Rupert Connor of Luxury Yacht Group. “The team at Heesen should be complimented on their willingness to constantly improve their product with every single iteration of their designs.”

That’s what is required for a brand to flourish, the new yard owner says, for many generations to come.

Project Frida

The 180-foot Project Frida is in build now and scheduled to launch this year. Interiors are by Luca Dini Design and Architecture. Heesen describes the style as reinterpreting “classic yacht design through a modern lens.”

Project Agnetha

Accommodations are for 12 guests in six staterooms, with a 925-square-foot master.
