With more than 60 years of experience and a current range of boats that stretches from a 28-foot center-console to a 61-foot convertible, Bertram Yachts is launching the third model in its center-console line: the 34CC. Why a 34-foot center-console? According to Bertram’s vice president of sales, Tommy Thompson, it was a happy medium between two of the builder’s current models, the 28CC and 39CC. But it also allowed the new build to meet two specific criteria: a variety of powerplant options and forward cabin access.

The 34CC comes standard with twin 400 hp Mercury Verados; however, the 34-footer can also handle triple 300 hp and 350 hp outboards. “You reach a size where you can be too small that you can’t have triples, you can be too big and you can’t have doubles, so we wanted to have the option of having 800, 900 or 1,050 horsepower,” Thompson says. “A huge feature we don’t dare eliminate from the boat by going down to a [32- or 33-foot build] is the entrance to the lower cabin. In a 34-foot boat, who wants to go through a side door out in the rain? It’s not just an entrance. It’s a real lower cabin. Two people can sleep down there.”

Optional amenities include tackle centers, a forward sun pad, a retractable cockpit sunshade and a galley. Courtesy Bertram Yachts

The combination of powerplant options and 23 degrees of deadrise at the transom is the result of Bertram’s experience with building other models. “We’ve integrated lessons from our best-running hulls to create the perfect blend,” according to Nicholas Fletcher, Bertram’s naval architect program manager. “We focused on balancing weight and running surface to deliver a ride that is comfortable and dynamically refined.”

Dan Hamilton, Bertram’s director of product development and engineering, says the builder also leaned into tried-and-true methods with the deep-V hull design.

“We prioritize resilient, proven system designs over high-tech solutions that can be difficult to manage,” Hamilton says. “Our approach ensures reliability and ease of use for our customers.”

Getting the proportions of the boat correct required Bertram to balance as much forward seating as possible with as much cockpit space aft as the design team could manage. And, as with other Bertrams, it had to be accomplished with an eye toward fishability. The 34CC has four insulated fish boxes, rod stowage and rod holders. There are also three helm seats for the crew to sit comfortably on longer runs out to the fishing grounds.

Bertram is hinting at expanding its center-console lineup with larger models too.

Bertram’s 570 Convertible is a versatile 36-knot fishing vessel with three staterooms and three heads. It replaced the builder’s popular 54-foot convertible. Features include a bulkhead tackle center with a sink, freezer and livewell, a removable tuna-size fish box in the sole, and an insulated transom fish box for the mahi. The galley was arranged with a standard standing fridge or with undercounter refrigeration.

At press time, two Bertram 570 Convertibles were on the market, priced at $769,000 and $825,000.

From the Archive

“After running the new 570 Convertible, I can say the 54’s passing will not be mourned for long. Adding a bit of length to a planing hull form without adding significant weight typically has a positive effect on performance, and there is no better example of this than the 570, which is the 54 with 3 feet added to her transom. She rises more easily to a plane than the 54 and, at speed, trims slightly less, about 4 degrees.”

The Bertram 61 is the biggest boat that the builder offers, in addition to the Bertram 50 and Bertram 35.

Design-wise, the Bertram 61 pays homage to the Bertram 54 from the 1980s, all the while incorporating modern mechanical, electronic and construction systems. The hull is molded, infused vinylester with a Kevlar keel and strakes. Components such as hatches and doors have FRP liners, and rub rails are made of heavy-duty vinyl with stainless-steel inserts and end caps.

Fuel capacity on the Bertram 61 is 1,720 gallons, giving anglers enough fuel to get out and back to the canyons. The transom deadrise is 18 degrees, which should make for a smoother offshore ride. Power is a pair of 1,925-horsepower Cat C32 Acerts.

A Seakeeper 16 is on the standard equipment list, to keep things comfortable in a chop.

When the fishing is done for the day, there are three en suite staterooms, including a full-beam master amidships with an athwartships berth. Forward of the master is a twin-berth stateroom to starboard, and the bow can be fitted with either a single, larger berth or two smaller berths in a nearly V-style configuration. The sheer size and luxury of the Bertram 61 is why it made our list of top sportfishing yachts.

The Bertram 35 sports 500 hp Caterpillar C7.1 diesels with ZF drives. With a 20,800-pound displacement, my test vessel hit a top speed just over 36 knots in 2-footers. The 35’s solid fiberglass bottom and cored hull sides with Kevlar-reinforced keel and strakes make for a relatively lightweight yet strong bluewater vessel. Courtesy Bertram

Something familiar caught my eye. It was the forward house structure with curved corner windshields, a bridge brow and a flybridge. They were instantly recognizable Bertram trademarks. But this recently introduced 35-footer is a thoroughly modern interpretation of the builder’s classic 31. The resurrected company is reintroducing the Bertram brand with this Michael Peters-penned model that’s based on the Bertram 31. The new incarnation combines traditional styling with modern features.

The 35 is a great sportfishing boat with an oversized cockpit ready for any fish-fighting fanatic, plus an amenities-filled interior.

The salon is accented with teak and maple Amtico soles and overhead dimmer lighting. A wainscot-style ceiling houses rod stowage for big-game gear. A galley to starboard has a microwave, two-burner cooktop, deep sink with cutting-board cover, undercounter fridge/freezer drawers and extra stowage. One cabinet houses the AC/DC panel and electric displays.

Bertram 35
The Bertram 35 has a familar feel on the outside, and her Marty Lowe interior is very 2017. The sharp contrast of white and wood in the decor adds a feeling of contemporary elegance while wide windows create a sense of volume. Billy Black

Opposite is the dinette with U-shaped settee and wooden pedestal table that converts to a double berth. Views are good through the frameless, single-pane windshield forward and the aft bulkhead’s tinted windows. From a cruising perspective, the Bertram 35 is a comfortable weekender. The single head has Corian countertops with a porcelain sink and a hand-held shower. The forward stateroom has an offset queen berth (Bertram offers a V-berth too), cedar locker and 24-inch flat-screen TV.

“Fish on” should be a regular cry from the cockpit, as Bertram sets up the 35 with rod holders, a livewell, in-deck fish boxes, and a transom door for the big ones. Optional teak decking and covering boards add a custom look, while the standard outfitting feels more contemporary. Engine-box cushions create sun-pad and lounge areas.

Up top, the flybridge is uncluttered. The optional wooden helm pod with Palm Beach controls is a nice touch to the raised console that houses multifunction displays and the Caterpillar engines’ 7-inch display. Ancillary systems such as switches, a VHF radio, thruster controls and more are in a recessed helm box to starboard. A cooler box is to port. Three Pompanette helm chairs keep the captain and spotters together. The options list includes interior colors and materials, thrusters, a Seakeeper gyro, electronics, fishing gear and tower/hardtop choices.

The spirit of Bertram lives on in the 35. Although she’s a new design, being on board feels like cruising with a legend.

Bertram 35
The first two 35s were contracted with Lyman-Morse in Maine. Bertram has since acquired the former Lazzara Yachts facility in Tampa, Florida, where it’s adding its own technology, tooling and molds. “We are not in a rush; we will do this right,” says Tommy Thompson, vice president of sales at Bertram. “We have a 60 on the table, originally a 58, and we’ll fill the size ranges as needed.” Courtesy Bertram

Numbers are paramount with the Bertram 31. More than 1,800 hulls of the five different models were built during its 25-year run. Regular production ended in 1983, but 23 Silver Anniversary models were built in 1986. The vessel’s deep-V hull form with 24 degrees of transom deadrise helped define the ride that would make Bertram Yachts a household name.

Notable features: Each version of the 31 had a 110-square-foot cockpit except the Bahia Mar, which had 147 square feet.

Belowdecks: The models differ slightly in layout; however, each has double bunks in the forward cabin.  Availability: At press time, more than 30 Bertram 31s were available, ranging from $25,000 to $208,791.

“After Moppie won the 1960 Miami-Nassau race, setting a new record … the future of the deep-V was secured. Richard Bertram is said to have commented that so many yachtsmen were waving their checkbooks at him that he had no choice but to build boats.” — Yachting, 2005

Bertram Yachts introduced the Bertram 35 at the Newport International Boat Show in September. The new model is the first to become available since the Bertram brand was relaunched under new ownership, and will be on display at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in November.

Michael Peters Yacht Design collaborated with Bertram Yachts on the Bertram 35. The yacht is an update of the Bertram 31 that made the brand name famous more than 50 years ago. The size, power, and amenities of the Bertram 35 make it a solid option if you are looking to get one of the best sportfishing yachts.

“This boat is built like and feels like a larger yacht.”

“The dimensions of the boat are so much better, making the Bertram 35 a perfect dayboat or overnighter,” Bertram CEO Peter Truslow stated in a press release. “The cockpit and flybridge are huge. The salon is open and light thanks to the full wraparound windshield and windowed aft bulkhead. The large settee and complete galley make the salon much more practical for times when you want to stay out overnight fishing or on the hook. The stateroom and standup head are similar in size to those found on bigger convertibles. This boat is built like and feels like a larger yacht.”

Power for the Bertram 35: Hull No. 1 has Caterpillar 7 Series diesel engines. Future 35s will have Caterpillar’s new 7.1 series engines for an estimated top speed of about 40 knots.

Michael Peters Yacht Design has also been working with Bertram Yachts, which plans to debut a Bertram 58 in late 2017. The design is based on the Bertram 54 from the 1980s, with updates by the Peters team. Tooling should begin this summer, just as the Bertram 35 becomes the first launch under the brand’s new ownership, Gavio Group. Bertram product development manager Tommy Thompson says the 58 will have more horsepower and better fuel efficiency than the 54. “Every captain out there has cut his teeth on a Bertram 54,” Thompson says. “We wanted to create the boat that the next generation cuts its teeth on.”

It’s been nearly 15 years since Bertram debuted its 670 Convertible at the 22nd annual Bertram-Hatteras Shootout, having announced the model less than a year earlier at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Following her launch, the angler-friendly 670 had an eight-year production run from 2001 until 2009.

Standard features: The cockpit measured 168 square feet, and Hull No. 1’s engine room housed 1,800 hp MTU 16V 2000s that provided a 37-knot top hop.

From The Archives: “One of the 670’s most unique features is a spiral staircase from the cockpit area to the flybridge. Sure, spiral stairs are gaining popularity on a variety of convertibles, but the 670’s are hidden so as not to hinder the boat’s profile.” — “Born in the USA,” Yachting, October 2001

We know, we know. The wait is killing us too.

Details so far are slim on a new Bertram Yacht prototype being built by Lyman-Morse in Maine, based on a hull design by noted speed enthusiast Michael Peters. But Bertram just released this rendering of the hull and is promising more details on the new model at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in November.

We’re told that tooling is now underway, and that Hull No. 1 will launch in spring 2016. The new model’s length has not been announced, but her top speed is expected to be upwards of 40 knots. The power plants are expected to come from Caterpillar.

“They are tapping into the existing customer base and are listening to captains and Bertram owners, and getting a lot of feedback,” Drew Lyman, president of Lyman-Morse Boatbuilding, said about Bertram Yacht. “I think we can lend a lot of ideas, and it’s going to be a really fantastic partnership for us to be able to support them and work with a great team.”

What’s next: As the new prototypes are built in Maine, Bertram is looing to set up a new production facility in the Southeast United States.

A new Bertram website is in the works too: Stay tuned at www.bertram.com

Bertram Yacht added another vessel to their long line of tournament-ready battlewagons with the addition of the Bertram 64. Following in the footsteps of her siblings, the B-64 is pure Bertram — solid, sexy and ready to fish. She features a 194-square-foot cockpit that houses a large mezzanine loaded with stowage, fish boxes, bait-well and a refrigerator/freezer. Standard power is twin 1,676 horsepower CAT C32diesels, with the option of 1,925 horsepower CAT C32 ACERTS or 2,001 horsepower MTU 17v 2000 CR M-91s. With the larger CAT option, the company predicts that the Bertram 64 will be able to top out around 40 knots. The B-64 will make her debut at the 2011 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, this October 27-31.
