Fish tales are the best tales. We’re told that some of them are occasionally even true. But whether it’s a story about the catch of a lifetime or the one that got away, it all starts with getting out there.

It doesn’t matter if you’re the hardest of the hardcore tournament fishermen heading out in any weather to find your quarry because that’s the day you have to fish, or if you’re a fair-weather angler who goes when it’s light and variable. The thrill of feeling a fish pulling on the other end of the line is the same.

A solid center-console is one of the best ways to get out there. From speed to style to pure fishability, the following six vessels are ready to take you to where your next fish tale starts.

Aquila 47 Molokai

Run Far, Run Fast

The Aquila 47 Molokai’s power options range from standard twin 600 hp Mercury Verados up to quad 400 hp Mercury outboards. When Yachting ran the 47 Molokai, we saw a top speed of 60-plus knots with the quads. At 47 knots, range is 600 nautical miles.

Rigged to Fish

For live-bait aficionados, there are two 42.5-gallon transom livewells. There’s also a 53-inch-wide casting platform, two 50-gallon aft-deck fish boxes, 510 gallons of total fish-box space amidships, and two 74-gallon coffin boxes forward. Whether it’s bigeyes or baitfish, there’s room for everything and then some. There’s also a cockpit bait-prep station and no less than 34 rod holders spread out among the gunwales, transom and hardtop. Just add outriggers.

Notable Features

The Aquila 47 Molokai has a double-stepped hull form that slices a seaway while its increased center tunnel clearance reduces sneezing. Construction is a vinylester-resin-infused hull and deck, as well as carbon-fiber primary bulkheads forward and aft.

Axopar 29 CCX

New Horizons

Finnish boatbuilder Axopar created the adventure-boating concept, and its Axopar 29 CCX expands the company’s boundary-breaking design with this fishing-focused craft.

Have It Your Way

Axopar offers numerous options to fine-tune the 29 CCX’s angling experience. Some of the amenities include a 33-gallon livewell abaft the helm seats, an 18.5-gallon livewell to port, a 19-gallon macerated fish box forward, a tackle station, a foldable aft leaning post with six rod holders, and four in-gunwale rod holders. Up to 16 rod holders can be added, and the builder can prep the boat for a trolling motor.

Built for Seas and Speed

The Axopar 29 CCX’s twin-stepped hull has a knifelike entry with a 20-degree transom deadrise. The lean-forward hardtop and three-sided glass enclosure provide protection from the elements. Raised bulwarks ensure safe transit around the boat in the chop. Power options are a single 350 to 400 hp Mercury Verado V-10 or twin 200 hp Mercury V-6 outboards. Top speed is reportedly 50 knots.

Contender 29Bay

Inside or Outside

Don’t let the name 29Bay fool you. This Contender Bay series flagship—there’s also a 23- and a 26-footer—is equally at home running off to cobalt waters in search of pelagics or stalking the shallows, thanks to its 16-inch draft.

Fishin’ Is the Mission

Wherever the day’s piscatorial pursuits lead, the Contender 29Bay has an armada of standard and optional angling gear to be ready for whatever is around. Standard equipment includes two 30-gallon in-sole fish boxes aft, two 26-gallon transom livewells, an 85-gallon fish box forward, casting platforms fore and aft, and an aluminum leaning post with four rod holders. Some options include a hardtop or soft top with rod holders, electric reel outlets, an upgraded leaning post with an extra livewell, Power-Poles, a trolling motor and outriggers.

Range to Roam

The 29Bay accommodates up to 700 hp. With a 185-gallon fuel capacity, the builder says, maximum range is 400 nautical miles. A standard Seakeeper Ride system ensures those are smooth miles.

Grady-White Canyon 386

Grady-White Canyon 386

It Starts With the Ride

The Grady-White Canyon 386 has the North Carolina boatbuilder’s SeaV2 hull form, with a wave-slicing entry that transitions to an ever-changing variable-deadrise form to ensure a softer ride in the chop. Deadrise at the transom is 20 degrees. The hull and deck are built with hand-laid fiberglass.

Triple Threat

Power options for the Canyon 386 include triple 350 hp or 450 hp Yamaha outboards. With the larger motors, this center-console has a top-end speed of 52.5 knots at 6,000 rpm. At 4,000 rpm, cruise speed is 33.8 knots with a 45.4 gph fuel burn. Fuel capacity is 410 gallons. The most efficient cruise speed is 26 knots, and fuel burn is 30.3 gph.

Get Catching

Designed from the get-go as a hardcore fishing boat, the Canyon 386 includes two 35-gallon livewells, two 149-quart in-sole fish boxes, a 291-quart fish box aft with a chill plate, 10 rod holders, four underwater LEDs, and a lean bar with a rigging station, sink and six rod holders. Options include 18-foot Gemlux outriggers and four hull colors.

Scout Boats 377 LXF

Style Meets Substance

The Scout Boats 377 LXF’s broad bow flare and sweeping sheerline catch the eye, but there’s a lot more beneath this center-console’s surface. Directly speaking, there’s a twin-stepped hull form that creates an efficient running surface with a 19.5-degree transom deadrise. There’s also a lithium-ion battery system to power all hotel loads silently, eliminating the need for a generator. Construction is equally modern with carbon-fiber-infused epoxy, creating a strong and relatively lightweight structure. Dry weight is 14,120 pounds.

Ready to Fish

The 377 LXF has a 30-gallon livewell, two in-sole fish boxes aft, and 12 flush-mounted gunwale rod holders. Eighteen- or 20-foot Taco outriggers are available to round out the offshore angling arsenal.

Ready, Set, Run

Owners can choose twin 600 hp Mercury Verados or triple 400 hp Mercurys. With the twins, top speed is about 59 knots with a 38.6-knot cruise speed. With the triples, top hop is about the same and best cruise is around 34.5 knots.

Tiara Yachts 48 LS

Dial It In

Tiara Yachts adopted a cockpit-module concept with its 48 LS, enabling owners to outfit their boat however they live their life on the water. With regard to fishing, owners can select the Adventure Module, which provides a 30-gallon livewell, a cutting board, four rod holders, stowage boxes, tool holders and more. Other angling options include 2o-foot Taco carbon-fiber outriggers and a hardtop rocket launcher with seven rod holders.

Get Up and Go

The Tiara 48 LS has triple 600 hp Mercury Verados. According to the builder, top speed is 50.8 knots. It’s a virtual tie for most efficient cruise speed at 33.3 and 38.3 knots, which results in 0.51 and 0.49 nautical mile per gallon, respectively. Maximum range at these speeds are 302 nm and 293 nm, respectively.

Finer Things

Belowdecks, there’s a queen berth forward and an amidships stateroom with twins. A 9 kW Kohler diesel genset powers the 48 LS away from the dock. The foredeck lounge is the place to relax after a day of catching dinner with the family.

Watersports toys and gear are essential elements in countless boating experiences. Hopping off the swim platform and into a kayak to explore an anchorage, grabbing a sea scooter to dive beneath the surface and check out the coral, tossing a dry bag into the tender to protect phones and glasses while playing with tow toys—all of it adds layer after layer of happiness and excitement to being on a boat.

In recognition of how integral this kind of gear is to fun days afloat, the boatbuilding company Axopar partnered with Jobe Watersports to create the Adventure Collection.

Dry Bags ($33 to $45) These come in three sizes and can attach to paddleboards or kayaks. Courtesy Axopar
Axopar Adventure Collection
Gama Inflatable Kayak ($1,040) It can be set up for one or two people by repositioning the seat. The neoprene is anti-scratch for durability. Courtesy Axopar

“The gear is perfect for bringing along on the boat, but its possibilities are so much greater,” says Jan-Erik Viitala, founding partner of Axopar Boats. “Imagine packing an inflatable two-person kayak or SUP board into a backpack and unlocking a whole new world of exploration. Curious minds can uncover hidden coves and secret caves, places only accessible with this kind of watersports gear.”

Cooler Bag ($220) Up to 24 cans stay chilled in this cooler bag for as long as 48 hours. The bag floats, which should make it a fan favorite at raft-ups, and it has a leakproof zipper to keep ice melt where it belongs. Courtesy Axopar

The collection includes an inflatable kayak for two, a stand-up paddleboard, an underwater scooter, a life vest, a range of dry bags and a cooler bag—with a line of sail-racing clothing and accessories on tap to add early this year. It is expected to include jackets, hoodies, T-shirts, caps and bags.

Axopar Adventure Collection
SUP Board ($1,130) This inflatable stand-up paddleboard is described as “super stiff.” It comes with an adjustable three-piece paddle, a pump, and a waterproof bag for stowage. Courtesy Axopar

There are two ways to get Adventure Collection gear. Outside of Europe, anybody can purchase it by the piece or on the whole through Axopar or Jobe dealers. Or boaters who purchase a new Axopar boat can spec the collection like any other option, for delivery alongside the boat.

Express cruisers offer boaters the benefits of sporty performance, sleek profiles and entertainment-focused layouts. From dayboating excursions to weekend and longer cruising, these vessels are true multi-taskers. To help boat buyers who are seeking pre-owned express cruisers, we go in-depth on 10 midsize yachts that are ready for new owners today.

Tiara Yachts Coupe 53
Tiara’s 53 Coupe has low-hour IPS propulsion, 34-knot speed and three staterooms. Asking price: $1.349 million. Courtesy Galati Yacht Sales

2017 Tiara Yachts 53 Coupe – Newport Beach, California

“This Tiara Yachts 53 Coupe express cruiser is a head-turner at the docks with sporty lines accented by a raked windshield and a piercing Navy Blue hull.” Galati Yacht Sales has this California-based Tiara C53 listed at $1.349 million.

“The yacht’s split-level bridge deck is nearly as bright as the outdoors, with a white-accented color palette, teak soles, windows from the ceiling-to-settee level, an electric sunroof and butterfly sliding glass doors aft. Bamboo White Chilewich wall coverings throughout, not only warm the interior, but also create an inviting textured effect.”

Azimut Yachts Atlantis 51
The Azimut Yachts Atlantis 51 has a 35-knot top hop and a Bahamas-friendly 4-foot, 3-inch draft. Courtesy MarineMax

2020 Azimut Atlantis 51 – Utopia – Lewisville, Texas

“Azimut Yachts’ Atlantis 51 is an express cruiser aimed at families looking for a vessel with home-like cruising comfort, multiple entertainment spaces and admirable performance. MarineMax currently has Utopia, a 2020 Azimut Atlantis 51, listed for $1.199 million, which represents a $100,000 price reduction.

Utopia’s sleek lines are accented by a raked windshield, which is accented further by elongated and tinted hullside windows that visually lower the yacht’s profile.

A shallow 4-foot, 3-inch draft makes the 53-footer beach- and sandbar-accessible, while twin low-hour (191) 600 hp Volvo Penta D8 diesels push Utopia to a reported 35-knot top hop and a 32-knot cruise speed. It’s also outfitted with a Seakeeper NG6 gyrostabilizer to make the ride as stable as a table.”

Sunseeker Predator 68
The three-stateroom Sunseeker Predator 68 Gravitas has 38-knot speed, new engines and is asking $2.195 million. Courtesy Allied Marine

2018 Sunseeker Predator 68 – Gravitas – Miami, Florida

“It’s not every day that prospective owners have the chance to purchase a zero-hour used yacht, but that’s exactly what’s available with Gravitas, a 2018 Sunseeker Predator 68.  The supersize express cruiser is listed with Allied Marine for $2.195 million; however, the 68-footer has two brand-new 1,200 hp MAN diesels with a full engine warranty from the manufacturer.

A powerful combination of design elements come together in the Predator 68 with stylish, sleek lines, 38-knot performance and a variety of onboard entertainment spaces–inside and outside.

Done with your morning swim and looking to catch some sun? Take your pick between the foredeck sun pad or the cockpit sun pad. The cockpit has alfresco dining space for everyone aboard at a U-shaped settee and fixed folding table. The grill makes serving the aft dining space a breeze.”

Zeelander Z55
Twin 900 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200 diesels give the Zeelander Z55 Fancy a reported top hop of 38 knots. Cruise speed: 32 knots. Courtesy Atlantic Yacht & Ship

2016 Zeelander Z55 – Fancy – Dania Beach, Florida

This Dutch-built Zeelander Z55 listed with Atlantic Yacht and Ship at an asking price of $1.745 million looks like a little ship. From its proud bow to its robust, heavy-duty hardware, this express cruiser seems ready to roam.

And roam it can. Power is a pair of 900 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200 diesels that reportedly gives this 55-footer a 32-knot cruise speed and a 38-knot top hop.

Fancy, as this Z55 is called, is all about connecting guests on board to sea and each other. Nearly 360 degrees of glass create a constant connection to the sea, bring in light to the salon and helm and provide unobstructed sightlines for the skipper. Need more natural light? There is a retractable sunroof over the helm and dinette.

2021 Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin
This 2021 Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin has a fine entry, indoor-outdoor living and an all-weather pilothouse. Asking price: $369,500. Courtesy Jeff Brown Yachts

2021 Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin – Coronado, California

“The Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin is fast, fun, adventurous and capable. Listed with Jeff Brown Yachts, the asking price is $369,500.

With a reported top-end speed of 47 knots, the Axopar XC Cross Cabin is a fast and responsive vessel. Powered by twin 300 hp Mercury V8 outboards, this boat turns heads as it dices a seaway. Cruising speed is about 31 knots. Dial it back to 3,500 rpms and roughly 28 knots, and range is about 280 nautical miles.

Open the pilothouse’s sliding doors, sunroof and Gullwing doors and guests can enjoy an open- air environment while blazing across the water. Relax on the foredeck sun pads, or in fold-down cushioned seats on the roomy aft deck. As guests take a swim, enjoy a few drinks from the wet bar. Shower off on the aft deck before heading in for a short lunch break to cool off.

Riva 56' SportRiva
The 34-knot Riva 56′ SportRiva has an express cruiser profile with the benefits of a flybridge. Courtesy Atlantic Yacht & Ship

2012 Riva 56’ SportRiva – Gabriela – North Miami, Florida

“The Riva 56′ SportRiva is a yacht where Italian elegance and luxury meets innovative design. The focus of the 56′ SportRiva’s design is on the huge curved windscreen glass,” Yachting previously reported. “The windscreen panels extend across and up and over the lower helm and what looks like a secondary windscreen above is purely a contrasting decorative panel. The flybridge has its own prominent reverse-angle windscreen that challenges the flowing lines and adds a hint of aggression to the style but you reap the benefits of this screen out at sea when traveling at speed.”

Now step aboard Gabriela, a 2012 Riva 56′ SportRiva.

Pershing 62
The Pershing 62 Behike has chic lines, 45-knot speed and a contemporary interior. Courtesy Gilman Yachts

2018 Pershing 62 – Behike – Fort Lauderdale, Florida

“Gilman Yachts currently has Behike, a Pershing 62, listed for sale with an asking price of $1.75 million. This 2018 hardtop express cruiser is known for its combination of luxurious appointments and 45-knot speed.

“As for cruising, hold onto your hats. Like all Pershing yachts, the 62 goes like the ballistic missile that is her namesake,” Yachting previously reported. “Her standard pair of 1,550 hp MAN diesels mated to Arneson ASD 14 surface-piercing drives propelled the 62 to a 45-knot top end and a fast cruise of 36-plus knots, according to Pershing. At these speeds, those MANs would burn well over 100 gph, but hey, one has to put 3,100 horses to work occasionally, right?””

Sea Ray Sundancer 60
The Sea Ray Sundancer 60 Three Sons has a three-stateroom layout and a 34-knot-plus top hop. Asking price: $769,999. Courtesy Atlantic Yacht & Ship

2008 Sea Ray Sundancer 60 – Three Sons – Washburn, Wisconsin

Three Sons, a Sea Ray Sundancer 60, is listed for sale with Atlantic Yacht & Ship and has an asking price of $769,999. The 2008, 34-knot-plus express cruiser has cruising accommodations for six within its three-stateroom layout.

Three Sons is powered by twin 1,100 hp MAN V-10 diesels, which is the same propulsion setup Yachting experienced during our initial sea trial of the Sea Ray Sundancer 60.

“With the luck of the draw, winds and seas were such that running offshore would have been at best unpleasant. Even the Intracoastal Waterway was stirred up, but the 60 had no problem slicing through the chop,” Yachting previously reported. “Her two 1,100 hp electronically controlled, common-rail MAN diesels reached maximum turns in approximately 30 seconds without hesitation and I recorded a maximum speed of 34.8 knots.”

Riviera 5000 Sport Yacht
The Riviera 5000 Sport Yacht Optimist is for sale. It sleeps seven, has alfresco dining and a 30-knot top hop. Asking price: $649,000. Courtesy Gilman Yachts

2013 Riviera 5000 Sport Yacht – Optimist – West Palm Beach, Florida

“Gilman Yachts has listed Optimist, a 2013 Riviera 5000 Sport Yacht, with an asking price of $649,000. The express-style cruiser has a two-stateroom, two head, layout that can sleep seven thanks to a convertible sofa in the lower salon that converts into a Pullman berth forming upper and lower bunks.

One of this yacht’s highlights is the helm-station experience. Yachting has previously reported how well Riviera designed the double-leather-seat helm space on the 5000 Sport Yacht, including its sightlines: “Two forward-facing windows have uncluttered views and are served by decently sized wipers. Add the long side windows and the open after bulkhead, and you have a near-flawless, 360-degree line of sight.” Additionally, there is a retractable sunroof in case the skipper wants to bring breezes and more natural light into the salon. The helm is also set up with a Garmin electronics suite, including multifunction GPS, displays, radar, autopilot and more. There is also joystick driving and a Skyhook vessel-positioning system.”

Riva Dolceriva Epica
The Dolceriva Epica has a 40-knot top hop and accommodations to sleep four. Courtesy Allied Marine

2021 Riva Dolceriva – Epica – Huntington, New York

The 48-foot Riva Dolceriva Epica, listed with Allied Marine, is for sale and is asking $1.9 million. The 2021 build has only 175 hours on its Volvo Penta diesels, has a 40-knot top hop and has two staterooms for cruising with family and friends.

The outside spaces aboard this yacht include two sun pads that flank the teak-sole cockpit. Immediately forward and to port is a four-person L-shaped settee and a table that folds out to create a larger dining space with the three-person bench sofa to starboard. The helm is forward and to starboard.”

“Every foot on board is used for socializing and practical living; indoors and now outdoors as well, infused with a myriad of new onboard solutions and functionalities, no matter if cruising along or spending time at anchor. The innovative Gullwing Door concept opens up the front cabin, the sociable foredeck seating with table or with the large sun-deck, in addition with its versatile aft-deck modules ensures our customers get a boat with the equipment they want. The large sliding canvas roof, together with the two large sliding doors, really opens up the cabin to the elements on days when the weather allows,” the boatbuilder stated.

The enclosed pilothouse offers a respite from the cold, the heat or foul weather. Gullwing doors open the space to breezes when desired. Courtesy Jeff Brown Yachts

My favorite feature on the 2021 Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin are the Gullwing doors. Bring the outside adventure inside by opening the doors in the forward cabin. Lots of sunshine and cool breezes flow through the cabin. Owners have easy access to the outside decks through the Gullwing doors or via steps that lead to the pilot house.

Unfortunately, there are times when weather pushes everyone back to shore and the Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin is an all-weather boat. After closing the sunroof, sliding doors and Gullwing doors, guests will find the pilot house and cabin spacious and comfortable. The windscreen on the is slanted forward, allowing the wind to help keep raindrops off the windscreen.

After a long day in the sun, owners can retire to the cabin, which is located in the bow. It has an L-shaped settee, bench-style seat, sink and a berth that sleeps two. To help preserve space, the head is located under a fold-up cushion on the L-shaped settee. Dive into a book or open watch for shooting stars before getting a cozy night’s sleep.

Galeon 420 Fly Bone Voyage
Bone Voyage is a Galeon 420 Fly with Volvo Penta D6 engines and a two-stateroom, two-head layout. It’s offered by Curtis Stokes and Associates for $665,000. Courtesy Curtis Stokes

Galeon 420 Fly – Bone Voyage

A Great Loop veteran, Bone Voyage is a 2020 42-foot Galeon motoryacht with a two-stateroom, two-head layout and reliable Volvo Penta power, plus a Fischer Panda 12-kW generator and updated Raymarine electronics. It’s offered by Curtis Stokes and Associates for $665,000.

Bone Voyage has a master stateroom forward with an island queen berth and en suite head with an enclosed shower. The starboard guest stateroom has side-by-side single berths that convert into a double berth, with the head and shower just forward.  For additional sleeping arrangements, the starboard settee in the salon also converts to a double berth if needed.

The lower helm is starboard forward in the salon and is raised one step up from the salon, with a bench seat, Raymarine electronics and an opening window. On the flybridge, there’s a Bimini top for sun protection plus an eisenglass enclosure with the helm to starboard. On the aft deck is a Kenyon barbeque grill, a wet bar, Isotherm refrigerator/freezer, wraparound seating with a table aft and ample stowage.

There are approximately 1,040 hours on the vessel’s twin Volvo Penta D6 engines, which give it a cruising speed of 16 knots and a top hop of 30 knots. It also has a shallow-water-friendly draft of just 3 feet, 9 inches.

Yachting previously wrote: “At first glance, the flybridge dominates this 42-footer’s profile, extending all the way over the aft cockpit, with a sharply angled radar arch that owns the space above the long, dark, juxtaposed windows of the salon and curves of the hull. Every flybridge motoryacht under 60 feet is fighting the same design battle: maximizing the interior space and ambient light without designing topsides that look overly boxy. It’s a challenge to balance form and function, but this Galeon has hit the mark.”

Where is Bone Voyage located? The yacht is currently lying in Vero Beach, Florida.

Ten years after Finnish boatbuilder Axopar Boats launched its first model, the Axopar 28, the builder recently debuted its new Axopar 29 Range.

The series has two models: the Axopar 29 Cross Cabin (XC) and the Axopar 29 Sun-Top (ST). While the designs have familiar Axopar DNA, there have been some changes, according to the builder.

In a press release, Axopar stated that these changes included “redefined hydrodynamics and improved efficiency, the hull itself is more defined, more fluid, and with a less angular stance about it.” The hull form is a twin-stepped, deep-V design with a knifelike entry and 22.5 degrees of transom deadrise.

Axopara 29
The Cross Cabin offers all-weather cruising. You can see here this 29 XC has the maximum available horsepower option-twin 200 hp outboards. Single 300 to 400 hp outboards are also available. Courtesy Axopar Boats

The builder says that the “bow section is higher with a more pronounced flair that will impart a sense of protection from the elements and maintain its renowned ride quality, even in rougher conditions. The walkaround side decks are also wider, making maneuvering around the boat easier.”

These enhancements are based on the builder’s decade of experience building and running the Axopar 28 as well as customer input.

The 29 XC has an offset helm station, cleaner sightlines, wider and taller sliding doors, more and level floor space as well as increased legroom for the helmsman and passengers alike, according to Axopar.

The 29 ST is notable for its improved social spaces. The cockpit has a U-shaped settee and a foldout hi-low table, which also forms a sun pad. The settee’s backrests adjust four ways to accommodate multiple seating and relaxing scenarios. There is a foredeck lounge to accommodate even more friends and family for that sunset cruise.

Perhaps, the most significant design change is found at the bow where it has what it calls a multicabin. The area can serve as under-deck stowage and have a freshwater toilet and sink, or it can be set up as a full-length cabin for overnighting.

“The multicabin forward gives tons of extra usability for the boat and now you can have two couples, or two adults and two kids staying overnight, when selecting the main sleeping aft cabin to the boat.,” the builder stated in a press release.

Power options are a single 300 hp to 400 hp outboard or twin 200 hp outboards. The builder says that when running the Axopar 29 models between a 22-knot to 32-knot cruise-speed range, fuel efficiency is virtually unchanged. Axopar adds that the 29 models are capable of a 37-knot fast cruise speed thanks to the hull-design improvements. The builder says fuel economy has increased by up to 30 percent as well and range is 200-plus nautical miles.

Top-end speed is reportedly around 48 knots.

What a shame that I had only an afternoon to play with Axopar’s new flagship, the 45 XC. When I first saw it the day before, the boat was tied to an outer pontoon at the Cannes Yachting Festival with a kayak and an electric mountain bike strapped to the coachroof rack, unwashed salt glistening in the early autumn sunshine. The 45 XC looked liked it had just returned from an epic voyage. These Finnish-designed crossover vessels look adventure-ready.

Outwardly, all Axopars share the same design cues: slightly reversed stems, a glimpse of hull steps at the waterline, high bulwarks and deep walkaround decks. On the bigger models, there are also cabins with an explorer-style, raked-forward windshield.

The XC in this model’s name stands for “cross cabin.” Think of a nautical multitool, and you will get the gist. Every cubic inch aboard has a function—or three. Stuff slides back and forth, glides up and down, and rotates this way and that way to meet all manner of guest demands.

For instance, when pushed forward, the 45 XC’s side-deck doors open up the after half of the cabin to the side decks, a feature that is made all the more interesting by fold-down bulwark sections that increase on-deck real estate and reinforce the connection with the sea beyond. With the addition of a couple of cushions, those fold-down surfaces become bench seats. Conversely, push those side doors back, and the bridge end of the cabin opens up. Moreover, a furniture module amidships can slide back and forth to maximize floor space forward or aft, while sunroofs above bathe the space in sunshine and fresh air.

The forward cuddy cabin, accessed via a sliding door to port of the helm and located down a few steps, has a lower salon with wraparound sofa seating and a V-berth tucked into the bow for overnights, long weekends or just rainy-day quiet time with a book. A head-shower compartment is to starboard. There is plenty of natural light, thanks to two windows and a skylight in the superstructure, which has sections that hinge up gull-wing-style to bring in more light and fresh air, as well as provide more access. With everything open, the 45 XC’s interior feels very different, making the forward cabin an inviting alternative during the day for those wanting shade and quietude.

Outside spaces are just as useful. There is a sun pad on the foredeck and various options for the cockpit, which comes bare as standard. The 45 XC that I got aboard has a U-shaped booth setup, but an alternative arrangement places a sun pad on top of the boat’s aft cabin that’s big enough for a second double berth and an extra head. The latter option also has a sizable window facing aft onto the motor casings and twin hatches that are otherwise hidden beneath the sun pad cushions.

The Axopar 45 XC is rigged for Mercury outboard power, and the one I got aboard came with the biggest available option: triple 300 hp Mercury Verados. Weather permitting, 900 heavy horses should deliver up to a cheek-flapping 48 knots comfortably. Frustratingly, during the early stages of my sea trial, we were bucking 3-plus-foot seas and a stiff southwesterly, so our best runs remained in the low-40-knot range for a long while until, by chance, we found a slightly calmer patch of water to push those ergonomically friendly throttles to the pins. A couple of reciprocal runs soon confirmed that the gloves could come off properly. From a standing start, the 45 XC was on plane in around 10 seconds, and just 20 seconds later, the boat managed a couple of reciprocal runs of 43 and 47 knots. The 45 XC that I was aboard was running a little under half load with two people, no stores, three-quarters fuel and a half-empty water tank.

Helm ergonomics are good, and the vessel’s handling is precise, although if the helmsman turns the wheel over too sharply, the 45 XC can oversteer, and those hull steps will momentarily lose their lift. Given suitable sea conditions, this crossover craft fast-cruises efficiently all day at around 28 knots, which equates to 5,000 rpm, or 80 percent of the engines’ maximum rev range. At that rate and allowing for a 10 percent fuel reserve, expect to get a 240-nautical-mile range between fuel stops. Nudge the speed up by 10 knots, and it will knock only around 50 nm off the cruising-speed range.

Most of the Axopar 45 XCs already sold for North American destinations are bound for South Florida, with options such as air conditioning, a wet bar and fishing amenities.

These crossover boats are indeed adventure-ready, no matter what type of at-sea adventure an owner has in mind.

The Range

The Axopar model lineup includes 11 models across five core hull sizes: 22, 25, 28, the best-selling 37 and, most recently, the flagship 45. If the standard offerings aren’t enough, German performance enhancer Brabus Marine has pimped-up versions of the 25, 28 and 38. They are billed as the Brabus Shadow 300s, 500s and 900s.

Design Origins

Axopars are built in Poland, but the creative team is Finnish. The concepts come from company founder Jan-Erik Viitala.

Axopar has been on the Financial Times’ list of 100 fastest-growing companies for two years and is now delivering at least 1,000 boats a year. More than 5,000 Axopars have been delivered to date. This year, the Axopar 22 is being introduced to reinvigorate the entry-level models as the Axopar 24 retires.

The Axopar 22 has contemporary styling. There’s a sharp entry and a slightly reversed bow with a pronounced bluff deck overhang to deflect spray. Designers also created a chunky stepped-hull form with chines carried all the way forward.

Two versions of the Axopar 22 are available: Spyder or T-Top. A single 115 to 200 hp Mercury outboard delivers the oomph. The 22 I got aboard was Hull No. 4, a Spyder. It had a Merc 200 outboard and easily topped 40 knots. At a fast cruise of 30 knots, range would be around 170 nautical miles.

Those hull steps do their job without any fuss. The boat was on plane in about five seconds, and there was minimal heeling. From the helm, the 22 inspired confidence, and there were no nasty snags in even the sharpest of turns.

The first Axopar was the 28, which launched in 2014 and is still part of the model range with three versions available: an open, a cabin and a T-top. At the top of the range is the Axopar 37, which also comes in three versions: Open, XC Cabin and Sun Top. All the models have stepped, deep-V hull forms, are propelled by outboard engines, and have walk-around decks. The bigger models are open, with or without T-tops, or have enclosed wheelhouses.

With typical extras and the biggest engine, the Axopar 22 is priced around $76,601. The same boat with the smallest engine would be $68,464. The standard specification includes a bare deck, the bridge console, pilot and copilot seats, and an aft bench seat.

Clever Details

A handrail rings the deck. The windshield adjusts from near-vertical to fully raked by twisting knobs on each side. A locker under the aft deck can accommodate a life raft.

Axopars Inbound

According to Axopar, about 40 percent of its boats are shipped to North America. The models all nest efficiently into containers. As of midsummer, 10 of the Axopar 22s had arrived and 140 more were on order for the 2022 model year.

Behind the Design

The Helsinki studio of designer Jarkko Jämsén, called Navia, was responsible for all the Axopar designs. The studio’s biggest yacht project to date was the exteriors on the 253-foot Feadship Pi.
