Performance is at the heart of the Wallytender 43X, thanks in part to its triple Mercury 450R racing engines, which can propel it to a speed of more than 50 knots. Green Eyes is a 2023 Wallytender located in Miami Beach, Florida. It is offered for sale by Allied Marine for $1.25 million.

Flexibility is another defining trait of the 43X, which is adept as a family day boat, a superyacht tender or a fast resort shuttle. The center cockpit offers protection for guests and the convenience of a walkaround, while fold-down aft wings enlarge the entertaining space. There’s also a hydraulic passerelle that doubles as a swim ladder at the stern.

For overnight accommodations, the Wallytender43X has a double berth belowdecks with head and separate walk-in shower.

Green Eyes is also outfitted in a unique Gator Green hullside color, which makes this vessel stand out in any marina. It has been stored out of the water in a dry, covered slip at Haulover Marine Center, and it has just 220 hours on the engines.

Yachting previously wrote: “What makes the 43 different from previous Wallytender launches is a center cockpit that can be ordered with a galley module. The cockpit is created by high wraparound glazing that leaves room for practical side decks and provides a little more weather protection and privacy on board.

In other words, the 43 is proof positive that the Wallytender has evolved again—in ways that continue to make the boating experience better.”

The post wallywhy100 Reviewed appeared first on Yachting.

Can you imagine a boat’s engines burning a gallon of diesel every four seconds? Wally founder Luca Bassani doesn’t have to because his wallypower118 was consuming that at 60 or so knots when it launched 20 years ago. Now he’s older and happy to admit that speed isn’t everything.

“People don’t want to rush anymore, me included,” he says. “They want to enjoy the ride, and it’s much easier to do that when you’re going slowly.”

The semidisplacement wallywhy series—including the latest model, the wallywhy100—is about watching the world glide by rather than fly by. Still, these yachts can up the ante a little when, say, owners need to get ahead of deteriorating weather or get home in daylight instead of darkness.

wallywhy100
Taking up the yacht’s full beam, the owner’s stateroom is just abaft amidships with a sofa and en suite head. Courtesy Wally

In the wallywhy name, “why” stands for Wally Hybrid Yachts, with hulls optimized for displacement and semidisplacement cruising speeds. Each model’s numeral refers to approximate volume in gross tonnage, rather than length overall. The wallywhy200, a trideck, launched three years ago. A smaller raised-pilothouse sistership joined the lineup in 2023. The wallywhy100 is the smallest model at 70 feet length overall. They all have reverse bows and sharp, glass superstructures that help to define the Wally brand’s futuristic vibe.

The 100’s superstructure occupies the forward half of the profile, with virtually all dark glass. That enclosed space includes a bridge and lounge. The aft-deck doors close when the weather is bad, while the coachroof extends farther aft with opaque white acrylic skylights that restrict heat without blocking sunlight. The light comes through soft and diffused.

Even still, this yacht’s raison d’etre is to be open. When it is, it makes for a simply fantastic entertainment space. The spot where the outside and inside zones merge is blurred by optional frameless-glass screens that slide on tracks to the sides and abaft the wet bar. This area is a dining space with a circular table for six guests. It’s also the heart of the yacht for the professional chef taking delivery of the wallywhy100 that I got aboard. For him, entertaining friends is the boat’s principal purpose.

wallywhy100
High-back helm chairs are a Wally trademark. Note the constant connection between inside and outside. Courtesy Wally

At the after end of the cockpit are a pair of facing sofas, along with loungers just forward of the hydraulic swim platform, which is flanked by fold-down quarter sections. Overall, the swim platform is just four steps down from the main deck.

Side decks are protected by deep, teak-lined bulwarks, matching the teak decking on those quarter platforms when they are raised. The choice of material elevates an otherwise rather mundane area. On the foredeck are a pair of loungers for a private retreat.

Access to the deck below is via two sets of stairs, forward and to port of the bridge. One goes to the guest staterooms near amidships, while the other descends forward to the galley and crew area. The owner’s stateroom is slightly abaft amidships, occupying the full 18-foot-10-inch beam with a sofa and a forward-facing double berth. The en suite sink space has a glass sliding door that can be clear or opaque at the flick of a switch, while the shower and heads are separate with their own doors. Two en suite guest staterooms are amidships, one with a transverse double and one with twin berths.

wallywhy100
The long coachroof offers the practicality of weather protection while drawing out the yacht’s lines. Courtesy Wally

The galley and crew area can be accessed from two directions: the staircase or a door at the head of the guest corridor. This arrangement should aid traffic flow.

At the helm, seats are the same high-back affairs used aboard wallytenders and wallypowers. Handling is smooth, barely ruffled by the short chop we experienced during our early-morning runs across the Bay of Cannes in France. Like plenty of other semidisplacement designs, this yacht proved a little slow in some of the bigger turns. Visibility forward and to the sides is great, with less clarity looking aft. I didn’t really notice the chunky mullion ridge running right up the middle of the windshield to separate the two panes of glass.

The two engine choices for the wallywhy100 are twin 900 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200s or twin 1,000 hp Volvo Penta IPS1350s, for respective top speeds of 25 or 27 knots at half-load. Wally quotes fast-cruise speeds of 22 or 24 knots. With a little more than 1,200 gallons of diesel capacity, ranges are 360 or 340 nautical miles. The wallywhy100 that I got aboard had the IPS1350s, but was heavy with full fuel and water, and two Seakeepers. With one of them on and the Humphree Interceptors on auto, the best we did flat-out was about 25 knots. At 10 knots, owners could run 1,000 nm before the fuel runs dry.

But, as Bassani says, speed isn’t the ultimate goal with a yacht like the wallywhy100. What’s the rush?

Behind the Design

Chief designer and Wally founder Luca Bassani worked from his office in Monaco, with the Ferretti Group’s central design and engineering team in Forli, Italy. The minimalist interior scheme comes from Andrea Vallicelli’s studio in Rome. One of the wallywhy100’s interesting design elements is that the main deck is just four steps up from the swim platform.

Facts and Figures

The wallywhy100 has about 6-foot-10-inch headroom under its coachroof. Even with the engines adjacent to the owner’s stateroom, I measured just 69 decibels while underway (65 decibels is the level of normal conversation). This yacht is equipped with optional twin gyrostabilizers. In lieu of chaise longues aft, owners can select a garage, which has room for a few underwater scooters and swim gear, as well as other water toys.

Wallypower50 Offers Versatile Boating Options https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yachts/wally-new-wallypower50/ Mon, 23 Dec 2024 18:00:00 +0000 https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/?p=67770 The 36-knot wallypower50 is marketed for use as a chase boat, tender, day cruiser or luxury weekender.

The wallypower50 bridges the gap between the builder’s wallytender48 and wallypower58, offering versatility as a tender, day cruiser or luxury weekender. Volvo Penta IPS 650s give the yacht a reported 36-knot top hop and 30-knot cruise speed. Courtesy Wally

The wallypower50 is a model intended to serve as a bridge between the builder’s wallytender range (which tops out at a wallytender48) and the wallypower58, which was previously the next-size model in the Wally powerboat lineup.

The idea with the wallypower 50 is that potential owners will be able to use it as everything from a chase boat to a tender, day cruiser or luxury weekender.

wallypower50
Twin sun pads aft and drop-down bulwarks create over 50 square feet of extra deck space. Courtesy Wally

Design-wise, the wallypower50 has the more open styling of the wallytender line, but it is built with the sportiness of the wallypower58. Options allow each owner to customize the look even more, say with a wraparound fender that has more of a workhorse vibe. Wally’s Magic Portholes can also be integrated belowdecks, further changing the exterior aesthetic along with the onboard experience.

Out on deck, there are two sun pads aft instead of one (as is the case on the wallytenders). Drop-down bulwarks extend the dance space by more than 50 square feet for water sports and chilling out with a water-level view aft.

wallypower50
Belowdecks, there is a double berth, a head and a shower, a small salon and a galley for overnighting or weekending. Courtesy Wally

Forward of there is the cockpit for alfresco relaxation, followed by the cockpit salon with dining and seating for eight people, meaning there is room to welcome guests for cocktails or dinnertime soirees on the hook.

Far forward, there’s another sun pad on the foredeck with adjustable headrests, giving owners and guests a way to have some privacy. The anchoring system at the foredeck is hidden, keeping the space free of clutter for a more guest-oriented ambience.

At the helm, skippers can see operating systems and data on two multifunction displays, streamlining the look of the dash.

Belowdecks, there’s a double berth in the bow along with a head and shower, a smaller salon and a galley. Wally’s idea is to provide a space that will suit owners for overnights or weekend getaways.

wallypower50

Power is a pair of Volvo Penta IPS650s that Wally says provide a 30-knot cruise speed and a 36-knot top hop. That system comes with joystick control and optional DPS for close-quarters handling. The Volvo Penta Assisted Docking system is also an option for skippers who want computerized assistance adjusting for wind, waves and currents at the marina.

Key specs for the wallypower50: Length overall is 47 feet, 11 inches; beam is 14 feet, 1 inch; draft is 4 feet, 3 inches; fuel is 370 gallons; water is 63 gallons; range at cruising speed is reportedly 280 nautical miles.

The post <i>Yachting</i>’s 2024 Editor’s Choice Awards — Yachts appeared first on Yachting.

Welcome to the Yachting editors’ choice awards. Our staff has evaluated countless vessels, technology, gear and marine-related services during the past 12 months. We’ve discussed and debated. In the following pages, you’ll see the companies, products and initiatives that came out on top of those debates. So, without further ado, here are Yachting’s Editors’ Choice Award winners for 2024.

Aquila 47 Molokai
Twin 600 hp Mercury Verados give the 47 Molokai an efficient 35-to-40-knot cruise speed between 4,000 and 4,500 rpm. Courtesy Aquila

Aquila 47 Molokai: Agile Angling Platform

What We Said: “Versatility is at the heart of the 47 Molokai. It’s a fishing-focused, fast power cat with overnight accommodations.”

Feature-Filled: The boat’s 360-degree fishability is desirable for stand-up anglers ready to go toe-to-toe with a formidable foe. Forty-plus rod holders ensure that a rod for every fishing scenario is at the ready. Twin 42.5-gallon transom livewells, two 90-gallon in-deck fish boxes and a bait-and-tackle rigging station aid in the fishing mission. Whether it’s drifting over wrecks and reefs for bottomfish, flying kites for sailfish or trolling the deep for marlin, the 47 Molokai plays all piscatorial positions well. Twin 600 hp or quad 400 hp outboards let owners dial in the desired performance.

Final Thoughts: Stable is what one feels when stepping aboard the 47 Molokai, helped in part by its 14-foot-7-inch beam. Supporting the drag-reducing, efficiency-enhancing, double-step hull form is a robust build, including a vacuum-infused hull, deck and cockpit sole. Primary forward and aft bulkheads are carbon fiber, while the secondary bulkheads are vinylester-resin-infused. A cabin with a queen-size berth enables weekend excursions. The Aquila 47 Molokai offers the angling advantages of a center-console as well as the element-free amenities of a sport-fish boat.

Azimut Yachts Seadeck 6
Triple 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS650 diesels give the Seadeck 6 speeds of more than 30 knots. Courtesy Azimut Yachts

Azimut Yachts Seadeck 6: Eco-Conscious Cruiser

What We Said: “The Seadeck concept has a back-to-nature philosophy that includes ethically sourced and recycled materials and a cleaner, softer aesthetic with the sea as the focus.”

The Path to Sustainability: The Azimut Seadeck 6 has cork decks. It can run hotel loads—including the Seakeeper gyrostabilizer—at anchor for up to four hours during the day and eight hours at night thanks to a series of Torqeedo batteries and solar panels. The yacht also contains material from up to 15,000 recycled plastic bottles in its build, like the moquette carpeting belowdecks. Additionally, carbon fiber is used in strategic areas to reduce weight without sacrificing strength, which creates a lighter, efficient yacht. This express cruiser, however, does not sacrifice form, function or luxury. Its foldout cockpit sections increase deck space, and a hydraulic swim platform and steps enable seamless water access. Add in a luxe interior with sole-to-ceiling glass, light-tone furnishings, lacquers and a three-stateroom layout, and the Seadeck 6 ticks off a lot of boxes for owners.

Final Thoughts: A yacht can’t be all things to everyone, but the Azimut Yachts Seadeck 6 pushes the go-greener envelope for those seeking a vessel with a forward-thinking yet chic and luxurious design, and an eco-friendlier build.

Ferretti Yachts Infynito 90
The Ferretti Infynito 90 was the first model in a new series for the Italian shipyard. The Infynito 80 is premiering this fall. Courtesy Ferretti Yachts

Ferretti Yachts Infynito 90: Inside Meets Outside

What We Said: “Most striking is the Infynito 90’s partially enclosed foredeck, which Ferretti refers to as an all-seasons terrace. It’s a real wow feature, fully protected from above by a roof that stretches from the forward-raked bridge-deck windows to the ultra-high stem. The foredeck is open to the sides, with a view forward via a window.”

It’s Up to You: The all-seasons terrace has several layout options, including a hot tub with seating, a bar with six stools, and an L-shaped sofa with a table, to name a few. The standard accommodations are belowdecks with a three- or four-stateroom arrangement, but owners can choose a main-deck stateroom too. Additionally, the motoryacht’s sky lounge can have an open plan, with the helm area separated via bulkheads and a sliding door for crew privacy. Twin 1,550 hp and 1,800 hp MAN diesels are available. With the larger engines, the Infynito 90 can make an average top hop of 23 knots with an easy cruise speed of 15 to 17 knots. At a leisurely 10-knot jog, range is north of 2,000 nautical miles.

Final Thoughts: The Ferretti Yachts Infynito 90 represents a bold step in yacht design as it reimagines onboard spaces. It turns traditional concepts upside down to create something brand-new and multifunctional, and it’s all done with a high level of fit-and-finish.

Horizon Yachts FD110 Trideck: Going Long

What We Said: “Horizon Yachts’ Fast-Displacement series, penned by designer Cor D. Rover, is notable for its broad shoulders and high freeboard. These yachts carry a measurable beam forward to enhance interior and exterior volume, with a wave-splitting bow design and admirable performance across a wide spectrum of speeds.”

Inside Matters: The FD110 Trideck we got aboard had a warm, washed wenge wood with oak and walnut accents in the interior. A seemingly infinite number of other woods are available. Horizon offers owners a high level of customization. Referencing the volume created by the yacht’s design, the salon accommodates an 87-inch flat-screen TV with room to spare, and there are sole-to-ceiling windows around the superstructure. Additionally, the FD110 Trideck’s galley has room for eight fridge and freezer drawers, plus a full-height refrigerator. There is an on-deck owners’ stateroom with a king-size berth, and four guests staterooms belowdecks including three VIPs (two amidships, one forward).

Final Thoughts: For extended cruising, the Horizon FD110 Trideck is powered with twin 1,900 hp Caterpillar C32A diesels. At 8 knots, the yacht has a 3,000-nautical-mile range. At 16 knots, range is around 600 nm. We saw a top speed of 18.6 knots while aboard.

Horizon PC68: Room to Roam

What We Said: “Horizon Power Catamarans has done a lot to optimize the space that this yacht’s 24-foot-6-inch beam affords. Dismiss the thinking that lower staterooms on a multihull yacht are small and constricted. The builder performed some design magic and created four spacious dwellings. In the starboard hull, the master stateroom has a private entrance with a walk-around king-size berth athwartships in the peak, giving the owner an exterior view via a frameless hullside window. The cockpit has a 9-foot-long high-gloss wood table that seats eight.”

Ranging Far and Wide: In addition to the spaciousness created by the wide footprint, multihull yachts offer a different kind of ride than their monohull brethren. On the PC68, sharp hull entries make head seas seem gentle, while a Humphree active stabilization system reduces roll. Powered by twin 850 hp MAN i6 diesel engines matched with five-blade Veem props, the yacht’s range is more than 1,400 nautical miles at 10 knots. At a cruising speed of 19 knots, it’s possible to travel more than 600 nm between refueling stops.

Final Thoughts: With a Portuguese deck accessible through the flybridge forward door as well as a shoal-friendly 5-foot-4-inch draft and the range to travel far and wide, the PC68 is a multifaceted multihull.

Maritimo M60
Maritimo founder Bill Barry-Cotter personally ensured that the M60 would be a truly special design. Maritimo

Maritimo M60: A Classic Reimagined

What We Said: “To understand how the Maritimo M60 performs, you must know that it comes from Australia’s Gold Coast, north of Sydney. Local Maritimo owners do not have a protected Intracoastal Waterway. They cruise with few harbors in which to hide. That coast, facing the Pacific Ocean, endures waves that build across thousands of nautical miles of open ocean.”

Based on Owner Input: When Maritimo decided to update its original 60-foot motoryacht, the builder sought feedback from its global network of owners. The result is the M60 Flybridge Motor Yacht. Based on owners’ input, the builder focused on maximizing space in the cockpit and platform areas, offering versatile options for entertaining, adventure and relaxation. This yacht also has an aft galley, which socially connects the exterior and interior dining areas.

Final Thoughts: Thanks to its variable-deadrise hull with a deep keel, sharp bow entry and flattened progression aft, the M60 excels in offshore cruising efficiency, comfort and stability. Maritimo also stayed with conventional shaft drives for this vessel. Its 1,200-gallon fuel capacity and three options for power—standard twin 800 hp Volvo Penta D13 or optional 1,000 hp Volvo Penta or 1,150 hp Scania engines—bring distant ports of call within easier reach.

Ocean Alexander 35 Puro: Defining Italian Style

What We Said: “The Ocean Alexander 35P is the first model in the builder’s Puro series, which is being offered in addition to the Revolution, Explorer and Legend series. The builder says the idea behind Puro is to offer yachts for the global marketplace, instead of taking stylized cues from niche geographical markets. Size-wise, the 35 Puro is a 113-foot yacht with a beam of more than 25 feet and a gross tonnage of 273.”

Style With Spirit: Puro in Italian translates as “pure,” yet it can also mean clear or undisputed; all are appropriate to describe the styling of this Ocean Alexander motoryacht, which is produced in collaboration with Italian yacht designer Giorgio Cassetta and naval architect Andrea Agrusta. Within the notable, stylish exterior lines, the 35P has accommodations for 10 guests. The master stateroom is situated on the main deck forward and includes seating areas to port and starboard. The four guest staterooms are on the lower deck, with two VIPs and two twin-berth setups. On the main deck, there’s a conventional layout with a salon and formal dining area.

Final Thoughts: With the 35 Puro, Ocean Alexander has retained the brand DNA that has made it successful while still offering a new look and feel for the next generation of cruising enthusiasts.

Princess Yachts Y95
With a displacement of more than 230,000 pounds, the Princess Y95 has a draft of less than 7 feet. Princess Yachts

Princess Yachts Y95: Class-Leading Flagship

What We Said “The Y95 is the flagship of Princess Yachts’ four-model Y Class of open-flybridge designs. The flybridge is set up for driving and entertaining in comfort. There are twin adjustable helm seats, along with a forward-facing L-shaped seating area for guests. A bar on the flybridge includes a sink, an electric barbecue, a hob and a drawer refrigerator. The dining table up top seats 10 people. Additional dining space is on the main deck.”

The Flybridge Experience: With all respect to climate-controlled, fully enclosed helm vessels, there’s something visceral about enjoying a luxury yacht from an open flybridge. It might be the expansive views of the seas, a subconscious longing to relive the enjoyment of smaller open vessels more associated with youth, or the simple pleasure of feeling the wind and sun while underway. Whatever the reason, the attraction is undeniable.

Final Thoughts: With more than 80 percent of each vessel constructed at its 1.1-million-square-foot facility in Plymouth, United Kingdom, Princess ensures excellent quality control across its entire line. Performance is another strong suit. With an efficient hull form and wave-piercing bow, the Y95 reaches speeds of up to 23 knots with its standard 2,000 hp MAN V12-2000 engines, according to the builder.

Riva 82 Diva
The Riva brand celebrated its 180th anniversary in 2022. It helped to pioneer Italian yacht design in 1840. Courtesy Riva Yacht

Riva 82 Diva: Tradition Meets Technology

What We Said: “Flybridge motoryachts of this volume do not get any more elegant. Mauro Micheli and his team at Officina Italiana Design—which has penned every new Riva for about three decades—tell me their brief this time was to create a modern flybridge yacht that’s also sporty and streamlined. And haven’t they just? The 82 Diva’s proportions are precise, and it is the first Riva with fold-down quarter platforms that turn the cockpit and hydraulic swim platform into a beach club. The fold-down platforms add more than 10 feet to the almost 20-foot beam.”

Sleek and Stylish: The Riva’s polished yet sinewy lines hint at the yacht’s performance characteristics. The 82 Diva is based on a new hull form and powered by standard twin 1,800 hp MAN V-12 diesels. The builder promises a top speed of around 29 knots and a 26-knot fast cruise, at which the range should be about 300 nautical miles with the yacht’s 1,700 gallons of fuel. A pair of 1,900 hp MANs are an option for owners who desire a bit more velocity.

Final Thoughts: For a planing design with big, powerful engines, the 82 Diva is fundamentally a quiet yacht. At cruising speeds, the sound level in the owner’s stateroom is just 65 decibels, about the same as laughter or normal conversation. It’s only 67 decibels with the yacht at top speed.

Riviera 585 SUV
Twin 900 hp Volvo Penta IPS1200 D13 diesels with pod drives are standard power; 1,000 hp IPS1350s are an option. Riviera

Riviera 585 SUV: All-in-One

What We Said: “The short and very sweet story of the Riviera 585 SUV is that it blends spirited 32-plus-knot performance with a luxurious alfresco lifestyle. From the raised, enclosable alfresco deck overlooking the cockpit to the forward helm, everything is on a single level, yet headroom in the four staterooms belowdecks is more than 6 feet, 5 inches. That is an admirable engineering feat.”

Sport Utility Vessel: This Riviera is aimed squarely at those who want some of everything in their boating experiences. Port and starboard transom doors open to the teak cockpit, making it a full-on water-sports entertainment zone. A console partially shielded by the overhanging roof combines an outdoor grilling area with a bait-prep station that has tackle stowage for those who’d also like to do a bit of fishing during their time on the water. Inside, the layout with a master, VIP and guest staterooms plus optional crew quarters lends itself well to extended cruising with family or friends, with or without professional crew aboard.

Final Thoughts: An Australian boatbuilder, Riviera Yachts has a reputation for building robust boats, with hand-laid fiberglass construction and solid glass bottoms. The deep-V hull is built to handle rough sea conditions, lending plenty of confidence to skippers.

Sanlorenzo 57Steel
The Sanlorenzo 57Steel has a reported top speed around 16.5 knots. Range is about 4,000 nautical miles at 11 knots. Courtesy Sanlorenzo Yachts

Sanlorenzo 57Steel: Ocean-Crossing Elegance

What We Said: “Visually, Sanlorenzo’s 57Steel makes quite a statement. With exterior design and space planning by Zuccon International Project in Rome, this model has a nominal volume of 1,050 gross tons. Forward-raked bridge windows give the 57Steel a touch of go-anywhere styling, but it’s still a modern motoryacht with hybrid hull architecture—a modestly raked stem, square stem root, midlength fluted bow bulb, spray rails and flaring forward, and twin fin stabilizers and rudders.”

Bonus Space: Down at water level, with the yacht’s side platforms out, the beach-club real estate adds up to almost 1,000 square feet for guest relaxation and fun with the water toys. Add the gym next door, which includes a hammam, sauna and day head, and the whole area becomes one of the best wellness spaces of its kind on a yacht with a length overall less than 200 feet.

Final Thoughts: Piero Lissoni’s design studio in Milan created this yacht’s contemporary interior ambience. The decor focuses on oak veneers, soft whites and creams in a combination that should appeal to charter guests along with the yacht’s owners. This is a less-is-more approach to design rather than a minimalist one—and fun is still included. The main salon has a cocktail-bar entrance to its lounge and dining areas.

Sunseeker 100
The biggest diesels for this Sunseeker are twin 2,640 mhp MTU 16V 2000 M96Ls, with a top speed of at least 30 knots. Sunseeker International

Sunseeker 100: Big-Time Style

What We Said “Sunseeker offers an upper helm position, and wing or stern stations. With or without that second helm, the upper deck’s layout is asymmetrical. In a first for the yacht builder, the upper deck connects via sloping side decks to the forward terrace’s booth seating and sun pads; farther forward, a foredeck tucks deep into the bow. The foredeck is accessed via a short set of steps to port, while a companionway connects aft from the terrace to the portside deck. The after end of the flybridge is open to a degree of owner interpretation.”

Flexible Stateroom Layout: The Sunseeker 100’s accommodations should work for owners and guests, as well as different kinds of charter parties. In addition to the main-deck master, this yacht has four en suite staterooms for as many as 10 guests belowdecks. Two staterooms amidships have king berths, while the other two are forward with berths that can be configured as twins or doubles. They can also have Pullman berths.

A Fun Ride: Our writer found that turns were pretty prompt, given the vessel’s half-load bulk of around 220,000 pounds. With the fins and trim system active, the bow stayed up between 3 to 4 degrees, with roll and pitch nicely in check. Overall, the ride was remarkably comfortable and surprisingly quiet, even at top speed.

Two Oceans 555

Two Oceans 555: Primo Power Catamaran

What We Said: “Stability was among many characteristics that left me impressed with the Two Oceans 555, the company’s first offering in the United States. The builder was founded in 1989 and constructs its boats in Cape Town, South Africa, with power and sail models from 23 to 160 feet length overall. Two Oceans also builds offshore rescue craft, which explains some of the other characteristics I saw after taking a turn at the helm of the Two Oceans 555. For instance, I was startled to learn that this power cat gets about 1 nautical mile per gallon at 10 knots. With 750 gallons of fuel, that’s a lot farther than most yachtsmen will ever want to run in a single hop.”

Off-Grid Package: This power cat can be ordered with twin 9 kW Integrel Solutions generators coupled to the prop shafts with flex power takeoffs. Combined with the solar panels forward of the flybridge helm, this arrangement feeds a bank of Victron Energy lithium-phosphate batteries totaling 26,000 watts, providing more than 19 hours of silent running time for all air-conditioning, ship and galley needs.

Final Thoughts: The Two Oceans 555 has the interior and exterior real estate of a monohull nearly double its size. The builder made good use of that space, creating a yacht that’s ready for comfortable long-distance cruising.

WallyWhy 150
Range with this yacht is about 1,000 nautical miles at 10 knots. Speed is up to 15 knots, and range is about 350 nm. Wally

wallywhy 150: 78 Feet, 8 Inches of Innovation

What We Said: “The wallywhy150 is a two-and-a-half-deck design with around 150 gross tons—a spec we don’t often see with yachts this length, but, again, Wally likes to do things differently. The ‘why’ bit of wallywhy is an acronym for Wally Hybrid Yachts, which has nothing to do with hybrid propulsion, but rather references hulls that are optimized for a range of displacement and semi-displacement cruising speeds.”

Outdoor Living: There are two principal zones on the 150: the cockpit and the upper deck aft. The cockpit, occupying two levels, has its forward half at the same level as the after end of the main salon, which is lower than aboard more-conventional yacht designs. The rest of the cockpit is down a step. It has an island sofa amidships with a flippable backrest, so guests can laze facing forward or aft. The upper deck aft serves as a sun deck with partial protection from a mostly carbon-fiber hardtop. It’s a sizable space, whether used for family fun or as a party venue.

Final Thoughts: Standard power is triple 900 hp Volvo Penta D13s and IPS1200 pod drives, which should deliver a top-end speed of around 21 knots. With the optional triple 1,000 hp D13s with IPS1350s, Hull No. 1 hit 22.9 knots one way and 22.6 knots on a reciprocal heading. Wally quotes a 23-knot speed at half-load.

When Wally penned the wallywhy100—the smallest of the boatbuilder’s three-model why series, which also includes the wallywhy200 and wallywhy150—the goal was to create a vessel for those who like coupe-style yachts but want more performance and increased onboard comfort.

The wallywhy100 aims to achieve its mission in a few ways, starting with a single-level, main-deck layout. From the yacht’s shaded teak cockpit to the helm station forward, the real estate is open and surrounded by a low-profile glass superstructure, enhancing the airy vibe inside while creating a chic line outside. Wally stated in a press release that the main deck’s design is “about delivering the ultimate flexible open-enclosed space where the confining superstructure of a traditional yacht architecture seems to evaporate.”

wallywhy100
Under the hardtop are opposing settees, while a sliding glass door forward retracts to reveal a dining table for eight guests. Toni Meneguzzo

To access the main deck, there are four gently inclined steps up from the full-beam (18-foot-10-inch) foldout swim platform. Between those steps are two angled lounges for guests to catch some rays. Flare out the platform’s teak terraces and add a few loose chairs to form a beach club. This sea-level setup makes it easy to keep an eye on the kids when they’re swimming.

Under the hardtop are opposing settees, while a sliding glass door forward retracts to reveal a dining table for eight guests. With the doors tucked away, the delineation between inside and outside is nonexistent, especially when the side windows flanking the dining area are also retracted. Sliding glass doors forward of the dining space also retract, connecting two more settees as well as the helm station. With all of the doors and windows open, the wallywhy100 should feel like a supersize dayboat.

There are en suite accommodations belowdecks. A full-beam owner’s stateroom is aft, a VIP stateroom is to port, and a second guest stateroom is to starboard.

Power options are Volvo Penta IPS1200 or IPS1350 diesels. With the 1350s, Wally projects a 24-knot cruising speed and a 27-knot top-end speed.

The wallywhy100 will be on display at the Venice Boat Show at the end of May and at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.

Invictus TT420S
The Invictus TT420S has characteristics similar to its larger sistership, the TT460.

Invictus TT420S: Outboard-Powered Elegance

The Invictus TT420S is the outboard-powered version of the builder’s TT420, packing triple Yamaha powerplants at the transom. Yes, this means boaters lose the center portion of the swim platform. However, boaters gain a stowage area for toys where the inboard-outboard engines used to be, and the boat’s tender garage remains, capable of housing a 6-foot-10-inch ride. Also still present is Christian Grande’s overall design, with Hull No. 1 of the TT420S being painted in the builder’s signature Vogue White. Both hullsides can be equipped with foldout terraces to increase relaxation space on the hook. Accommodations belowdecks are for two to four people during long-weekend getaways.

wallywhy100: 70 Feet of Style

This is the smallest of three wallywhy models from the Monaco-based builder, with the designation 100 referring to the yacht’s gross tons of volume. Standard power is a pair of 900 hp Volvo Penta D13 IPS1200s, with the option for 1,000 hp IPS1350s. According to the builder, the optional powerplants provide a top hop of 27 knots with a cruise speed of 24 knots. The extra speed results in a slight decrease in range to 340 nautical miles. (Range is 360 nm with the standard engines.) On board, this yacht has a single “living level” from bow to stern, with a salon, dining area and helm connecting to what Wally calls the “beach deck” aft. Its sides fold out at anchor to increase the usable space for fun in the sun.

Vicem 95

Vicem 95: Fully Custom Construction

Empire is the name of this recent launch from the Vicem Yachts shipyard in Turkey. The yacht is part of the builder’s Cruiser line and is inspired by the Vicem 107, which the yard says the owners loved but wanted customized to suit their needs. There’s seating and dining at the foredeck. Outdoor shaded dining for 10 people is on the aft deck with a nearby fridge, sink and flip-down television. Up top, the flybridge spans two-thirds of the yacht’s length with yet more dining, seating and a bar. A hot tub is to starboard, and there’s space aft to stow a nearly 20-foot tender that can be launched with a crane. Inside, the indoor dining, seating and galley are all on one level. The full-beam owner’s stateroom is belowdecks with a king-size berth.

XO Explr 44: Speeds Above 43 Knots

Finland’s XO Boats has launched its first crossover model: the Explr 44. The shipyard is billing this model as an aluminum adventure design that takes its styling inspiration from superyachts. One example is two en suite staterooms that are equal in size. The forward stateroom has a double berth, while the aft stateroom can be ordered with a double or twins. There’s also a bunk in the pilothouse. The interior is heated as well as air-conditioned for comfortable cruising in most climates. Owners also have a choice of engines: two 600 hp outboards or triple 450 hp outboards, with a reported top speed of more than 43 knots. Solar panels can be mounted on the roof, which also has racks for bicycles and other sports gear.

Omikron OT60
Exterior and interior design are by Lorenzo Argento, who also has worked with Beneteau and Candela. Courtesy Omikron Yachts

Omikron OT60: First Model of a New Brand

Olympic Marine in Greece has launched a new boat brand: Omikron Yachts. The first model in the Omikron lineup is the OT60, which the yard calls a response to the “universal desire for a simple, sensible vision of sustainability.” The idea is to combine the efficiency and silence of a sailing yacht with the volume and conveniences of a motoryacht. The Omikron OT60 reportedly burns less than a half-gallon of fuel per nautical mile when cruising at a speed of 8 knots, and can achieve a top hop of 15 knots when owners need some extra oomph. The shipyard’s chairman says the design is inspired by the island-hopping lifestyle that is so common in Greece, “embodying the love of the journey with elegance and comfort at sea.”

Enata Vatoz
The wingspan of the Vatoz with the foils out is 23 feet, 7 inches. With the foils retracted, beam is 10 feet, 10 inches. Courtesy Enata Marine

Vatoz: Limited Edition of the Enata Foiler

Enata Marine in the United Arab Emirates says it plans to build just eight of these “ultra luxury” Vatoz editions of its 32-foot-long Foiler yacht. The hull is built from carbon fiber, with tinted windows adding to the sleek nature of the design by Timur Bozca, who says the styling was inspired by the dynamics of a stingray. Each of these boats comes with Enata’s Wingman management system, which makes it easier for skippers to use the foiling feature. Enata says the vessel has a cruising range of 190 nautical miles at 20 knots, or 150 nm at a speed of 30 knots. The yard also says the boat’s propulsion system is 40 percent more efficient than a traditional boat’s setup.

wallywhy150
Free-standing furniture in outdoor spaces creates flexible layout options. Gilles Martin-Raget

Wally has always been a disrupter in the yacht world. For more than 30 years, its team has taken what came before, stripped away everything but function, and rethought just about every other aspect. The results have included the original wallytender, the unique wallypower 118, and, more recently, various wallytenders and wallypowers. The trend continues with the 78-foot-8-inch wallywhy150, whose model name refers to volume.

The wallywhy150 is a two-and-a-half-deck design with around 150 gross tons—a spec we don’t often see with yachts this length, but, again, Wally likes to do things differently. The “why” bit of wallywhy is an acronym for Wally Hybrid Yachts, which has nothing to do with hybrid propulsion, but rather references hulls that are optimized for a range of displacement and semidisplacement cruising speeds.

Exterior styling is futuristic, defined by a typically Wally-shaped raised pilothouse and a high, blunt, and slightly reverse-raked bow. The bow design helps punch through seas at semidisplacement speeds and provides plenty of room for a main-deck owners’ stateroom.

Outdoor living is also key to Wally. There are two principal zones on the 150: the cockpit and the upper deck aft. The latter serves as a sun deck with partial protection from a mostly carbon-fiber hardtop that extends aft from that mostly glass raised pilothouse. It’s a vast space, whether used for family fun or as a party venue. The furniture options include free-standing, for maximum flexibility. The wallywhy150 that I got aboard had a dining table forward, a C-booth sofa and a pedestal table amidships, and scattered cushions for lounging aft. A gate to starboard accesses the foredeck, which serves as a technical area for crew.

wallywhy150
The wallywhy150 maintains its beam forward, adding volume to this main-deck owners’ stateroom. Toni Meneguzzo

The cockpit, occupying two levels, is the heart of this design. The forward half is at the same level as the after end of the main salon, which is lower than aboard more-conventional yacht designs. The rest of the cockpit is down a step. It has an island sofa amidships with a flippable backrest, so guests can laze facing forward or aft. There is no garage, but the hydraulic stern platform—which is normally flush to the cockpit—will accommodate an 11-foot-6-inch tender, chocked transversely.

Interior design is by Andrea Vallicelli, and the decor of Hull No. 1 is pure Wally: light, satin-varnished veneers with light-dark contrasts. The overall vibe is modern and tending toward minimalism, but with no hint of starkness.

The salon is also a split-level affair. The after end is a dining area with two runs of hullside windows from the main and lower decks, and high ceilings with a double curvature. A day head is in the after port corner. The raised forward half of the salon is all lounges, save for some built-in cabinetry. Free-standing furniture choices, once again, allow owners to personalize the space.

The owners’ stateroom has an access corridor that runs forward along the starboard side from a lobby. The corridor is surprisingly long, enhancing the stateroom’s sense of exclusivity, and it is flanked by picture windows and walk-in closets. The en suite head has twin sinks, a head and bidet, and a shower stall. The sleeping area has a forward-facing king berth and 270 degrees of glazing, including panes that wrap around the stem. Save for a pair of structural mullions, they provide clear views ahead for a “wow” factor.

wallywhy150
The swim platform rises flush with the cockpit and accommodates an 11-foot-6-inch tender. Gilles Martin-Raget

Wally says that some owners might prefer to use this glorious space for something other than a stateroom, such as an entertainment area with a bar and a dining table. That would leave the entire salon as a two-tier lounge.

Guest accommodations on the lower deck are accessed via a central amidships lobby. There are three staterooms, all en suite. The VIP has an inboard-facing king berth. One guest stateroom has an inboard-facing queen berth, and the other has forward-facing twin berths.

Crew quarters are below the owners’ stateroom, with access from the main-deck galley. These quarters include two en suite cabins with a total of four bunks, although most owners will run with a captain and just two crew.

Standard power is triple 900 hp Volvo Penta D13s and IPS1200 pod drives, which should deliver a top-end speed of around 21 knots. This wallywhy150 had the bigger alternatives: triple 1,000 hp D13s with IPS1350s. Hull No. 1 managed over-the-ground speeds of 22.9 knots one way and 22.6 knots on a reciprocal heading with the Humphree dynamic trim system and Seakeeper gyrostabilizer running. Wally quotes a 23-knot speed at half-load.

wallywhy150
The forward half is at the same level as the after end of the main salon, which is lower than aboard more-conventional yacht designs. Toni Meneguzzo

The ultimate range at 10 knots should be around 1,000 nautical miles, about the same with each engine package. At around 15 knots, this yacht would run for 350 nm, including a 10 percent reserve. Tank capacity is 2,378 gallons.

The wallywhy150 drives nicely, almost sprightly. Visibility is good, although chunky mullions in the raised pilothouse present a few blind spots. The two high-backed carbon-fiber helm seats look like something you would expect to see on a spaceship.

Off Cannes, France, in glorious weather with virtually no swell, this yacht was marvelously quiet. At the helm, I noted about 53 decibels flat-out and just 50 decibels at 10 knots and 1,000 rpm.

While the inside of this yacht may be whisper quiet, the wallywhy150’s forward-thinking design, solid ride, and chic interior speak loudly and proudly to the company’s motto of being 20 years ahead. It’s just what Wally does, again and again.

On a Roll

The first wallywhy150 was shown at Salone Nautico Venezia 2023 this past May and June in Italy. As this issue went to press, Hull No. 2 had launched, and Hull No. 3 was nearing completion, bound for the US.

Where It’s Made

Wallywhys are built at the Ferretti Group’s Mondolfo plant, which was originally home to Pershing. It’s 20 miles northwest of Ancona on Italy’s east coast. A new 750,000-square-foot plant in Ravenna will soon become Wally’s home and a principal production facility.

It’s Easy Being Green

The first wallywhy150 has a striking metallic-green hull. Stefano de Vivo, the Ferretti Group’s chief commercial officer and Wally CEO, described it as “power gray.” (Like mice and bananas, green is an unlucky word for superstitious mariners.) Various Wallys have been green, including the one that inspired the company’s name, Luca Bassani’s 105-foot ketch Wallygator. It launched in 1994 and was primarily dark green. The wallypower was originally metallic gray-green.

Pursuit of Perfection

Chief designer and Wally founder Luca Bassani brings passion to the boatbuilding process. While walking through the wallywhy150 with him, I mentioned that the small, aft-facing bench sofa below the big window in the stem of the owners’ stateroom was perhaps a little underwhelming. Bassani paused and then said: “You’re right, Phil. It needs to be the other way around. Or maybe…”

Later that morning, Bassani was sitting at the table on the upper deck, chatting on his cell. He cupped a hand over the phone and said, “By the way, I have already got the Vallicelli guys coming over later today to talk about what we can do better down there.”

Wally recently debuted its wallypower50, expanding upon the builder’s series-launching wallypower58 and wallypower58x models. According to yacht builder, the wallypower50 blends the open design elements of its wallytender line as well as the extra space found on the wallytender58 yachts.

High-performing vessels are a Wally trademark, and to that end the wallypower50 is powered with twin 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS650 diesels. Wally reports this propulsion setup gives the yacht a 36-knot top-end speed and a 30-knot cruise speed. Like the outboard-powered wallypower58x, there is a wallypower50x model and it’s offered with either quad 400 hp Mercury outboards or quad 500 hp outboards. With the 400s, the builder says top hop is around 48 knots and it’s 50-plus knots with the 500s. The wallypower50’s deep-V hull form and plumb-bow should effectively dice and slice the chop.

Wallys are also known for maximizing onboard livability. With the wallypower50, there are two cockpit sun pads flanking a walkway on centerline. Foldout terraces expand the cockpit’s real estate by about 65 square feet. The cockpit is teak, making it comfortable for bare feet on warm days. Additionally, there is a retractable stairway in the swim platform for seamless water access. More sunning space is at the foredeck with an additional sun pad that has adjustable headrests.

Under the wallypower50’s hardtop, an L-shaped seating arrangement and dining table is to port creating the scene for alfresco meals. There is a bench seat to starboard. Total seating accommodations are for about eight guests. A helm station is forward and to port, and is equipped with two helm seats.

Belowdecks, there is a double berth in the forepeak as well as a full head with a shower for cruisers looking to spend a weekend, or longer, on the water. There is a galley for simple meal prep and a settee for lounging.

“At Wally, design has always been at the forefront of what we do, and what we do has always been at the forefront of the yachting industry,” Luca Bassani, Founder and Chief Designer of Wally, said in a press release. “The wallypower50 is another perfect example of form and function coming together, where stylish lines do not come at the expense of dynamic performance but complement it. And the further you drill down into the details, the more of Wally you find, from our distinctive angular windshield design up top to the option of our Magic Portholes below.”

Yes, he said magic portholes. Stay tuned for more.

Benetti Oasis 34M Ubiquitous

The Benetti Oasis 34M Ubiquitous is scheduled to make its US debut at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. This is a 112-foot fiberglass motoryacht with exteriors by RWD in Britain and interiors by the New York firm Bonetti & Kozerski. The stern on Ubiquitous has Benetti’s Oasis Deck, which includes two wings that open to enlarge the space. An infinity pool is here as well, and the space adjoins the main-deck salon to give guests the option of sun-drenched or shaded spaces for relaxation.

Also at the show: Benetti will showcase the B.Yond 37M Never Say Never Again. It’s a 121-foot motoryacht from architect Stefano Righini with an E-Mode Hybrid system from Siemens Energy. The idea is to reduce harmful emissions while giving owners the option of four operating modes, including a fully electric mode for zero-emissions cruising.

Four New Yachts from Azimut

Azimut will have four yachts making their Americas premiere at the 2023 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show: the Verve 48 outboard, Magellano 60, Grande 36M and S7.

The Verve 48 outboard is a sport boat for weekends, designed in collaboration with Francesco Struglia. Its power is triple 600 hp Mercury outboards that promise a top speed of 50 knots. The stern has been updated from previous models; it now includes “the most extensive swim platform ever,” according to Azimut.

Crossover appeal is at the heart of the Magellano 60, with features intended for longer-distance cruising. For sustainability, the Azimut Magellano 60 can be delivered with HVOlution, a biofuel produced by Eni Sustainable Mobility. Azimut says this fuel, when combined with the shipyard’s semi-planing Dual Mode hull, can reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by more than 80 percent compared to yachts using traditional fuel.

With the Grande 36M, Azimut is showcasing a semi-walkaround upper deck that runs on the same level from the stern almost to the tip of the bow. The idea is to create an area that didn’t exist before on boats this size. Exterior design on the Azimut Grande 36M is by Alberto Mancini, with interiors by Achille Salvagni.

The Azimut S7 is a 72-foot yacht built with Volvo Penta IPS propulsion and a “super-lightweight” hull for a sporty ride. Azimut says the S7 also reduces fuel consumption and harmful emissions by as much as 30 percent compared to shaft-line boats with traditional chine hulls. Exteriors are by Alberto Mancini, with interiors by Yachtique.

This 78-foot motoryacht can be ordered with triple Volvo Penta IPS1350 engines for a maximum speed of 23 knots. With the standard Volvo Penta IPS1200s, that figure is 21 knots. Exterior spaces include a completely open upper deck with dining, sunbathing and a shaded lounge. Inside, there’s sole-to-ceiling glass for great views, with a main-deck master stateroom as well as guest staterooms belowdecks. The yacht can be ordered with a VIP and two guest staterooms, or with twin VIPs.
